I haven't heard Meshuggah or Cynic, but Opeth gets pretty brutal.

I will sign Opeth as a one of heaviest prog bands ever. Songs like: "The Leper Affinity" or "Wreath" are totally headcrushers. But the heaviest prog album I've ever heard is:

Messhugah - Catch 33

Yes, this one is a real mindkiller. Eight string guitars and Jens's voice are like a driller inside your head. And those lirycs combining paradox philosophy with extreme stream of hate.

What album did you buy? You should try to swap it with Nothing or Catch 33 on Ebay. Or listen to it some more, it might grow on you.

Ahem ... Meshuggah is nowhere near Death Metal. But I agree that the more extreme forms of prog metal are a minority here ... but then again, they're a minority in real life, too. Maybe we need to invent a cool subgenre name like Zeuhl to get more respect.

How about Zero Hour's "The Tower's of Avarice."  Awsome prog metal disc.  Maybe Opeth is a bit more brutal, but I find Zero Hour to be much more progressive.  Another good one is Spiral Architect's, "A Sceptic's Universe."  Anyways, these are heavier than Dream Theater, and I feel much more progressive than Opeth.  Of course this doesn't include Opeth's masterpiece, Damnation, but I do not consider this album metal at all.  Peace.

Yeah, that one is intense.

I totally agree with Abbath, exactly what I was going to post! I never really thought of Dream Theater as being heavy...but Meshuggah is! And if you would like to hears something REALLY heavy, try Scarve, the french band with an amazing drummer! I don't think it would ever get into progarchives, but the drumming is superb!
Currently listening to:
- Andromeda
- Pagan's Mind
- Kamelot

War by Messhuggah from Rare Trax because I can't get anyone to stay in the same room with me when I play it and they can handle the others.

as far as Opeth goes you guys...I'd say My arms your hearse is their heaviest...that or Deliverance.  My arms is the better album though, so I'll go with that one...April Ethereal and Karma...god damn excellent tracks.

Heaviest prog metal album?

I'd say Atheist - unquestionable presence, Atrocity - Hallucinations, Demilich - Nespithe is famn jazzy and  brutal, Ved buens ende is some crazy progresssive black metal...

Atheist is one of the best example for progressive brutal bands. All their three albums are to re-released by Relapse at the fall of 2005. I recommend them to everyone who has the ability to bear jazz/fusion and death metal at the same time.
So the heaviest prog albums are:

Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Lethargy - It's Hard To Write With A Little Hand
Voivod - Phobos (it is not just heavy but the most difficult album I've ever heard)
