Hi, - Canterbury Scene: Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom (1974) While I love RW, in the Canterbury scene, CARAVAN should be the flag bearer ... though some other groups (later) took over the mantle. RW kinda fits better in the experimental area, for his taste in mixing anything under the zoo! GONG is a good pick, although I don't look at GONG as Canterbury much, and probably a wider mix of music, that defies a lot of descriptions. - Eclectic Prog: Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts (1971) I prefer the period right after this, all the way to GODBLUFF/STILL LIFE ... much cleaner and stronger. - Krautrock: Dom - Edge of Time (1972) I'm not sure I could let go of Amon Duul 2's Dance of the Lemmings - Prog Folk: Spirogyra - Bells, Boots and Shambles (1973) While I like Spirogyra a lot, in this area I would pick The Incredible String Band ... and EARTH SPAN is just one of the rarest treats ever ... sadly a band that is not appreciated because they stood up for "poetry", not rock music or popular music per se. Maybe the ISB does not even fit in Prog Folk. - Psychedelic/Space Rock: Message - From Books and Dreams (1973) I'm not sure I would pick this band over GROBSCHNITT ... and specially SOLAR MUSIC. To my ears, Message, was interesting, but not that great music wise. This is a tough area, as I would probably like to put on Guru Guru here in their days with Ax Gernrich ... which is not only psychedelic, it is downright crazy and when it comes to spacy, this was better than Jimi! At least the music made more sense than the "songs" that Jimi did! - Zeuhl: Magma - Kobaïa (1970) Probably Mekanik or Kohntarkosz ... both of which have been massive staples in their live concerts. I think your choice is indicative of something so new and off kilter, that most of us could not get our ears tuned to it ... but with Mekanik and Kohntarkosz, this changed and we knew this was far out and serious. I would have a hard time making comments on a lot of the other stuff. Nice list!!! Check that ... very nice list!!!

^ Thanks, Cindy. We share Mixtus Orbis as a choice. I love Miles Davis' "Big Fun" and could have easily listed that already (would have been my Miles Davis choice). Love Spirogyra. Love the Agitation Free pick, The King Crimson pick, like The Yes Album a lot, The Doors and Universal Totem Orchestra picks. Oh, and Unexpect is good....

Here is second list from me, opting not to duplicate any acts I already listed (otherwise Duster would be in here again). I could not decide on one for Tech/Extreme Prog Metal. Maybe someone would point me that way based on that they know of my tastes. The stuff I remembered liking from that category was not doing it for me when I recheck it. Experimental/Post metal is easily my favourite metal category in PA.
Canterbury Scene: Soft Machine - Third (1970) Crossover Prog: Kate Bush - Hounds of Love (1985) Eclectic Prog: Jean-Claude Vannier - L'enfant assassin des mouches (1972) Experimental/Post Metal: Neurosis - Through Silver in Blood (1996) Heavy Prog: Black Widow - Sacrifice (1970) Indo-Prog/Raga Rock: Codona - Codona 3 (1983) Jazz Rock/Fusion: Embryo - Embryo's Rache (1970) Krautrock: Can - Ege Bamyasi (1972) Neo-Prog: Marc Ceccotti - Sometimes Around Saturn (2008) Post-Rock/Math Rock: Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven (2000) Prog Folk: Comus - First Utterance (1971) Progressive Electronic: Anna Sjalv Tredje - Tussilago Fanfara (1977) Progressive Metal: Thought Industry - Songs for Insects (1992) Psychedelic/Space Rock: Ghost - Hypnotic Underworld (2004) RIO/Avant-Prog: Cardiacs - On Land and in the Sea (1989) Rock Progressivo Italiano: Franco Battiato - Sulle corde di Aries (1973) Symphonic Prog: Aphrodite's Child - 666 (1972) Tech/Extreme Prog Metal: unsure Zeuhl: Eskaton - 4 visions (1981) Various Artists Tributes: Hamtaï! Hommage à la musique de Christian Vander (2007) Prog Related: Gerard Manset - La mort d'Orion (1970) Proto-Prog: The Pretty Things - S.F. Sorrow (1968) This might seem too challenging to some, but for any willing to present lists, again, cover as many or as few categories as you like. :) Edited by Logan - December 16 2024 at 16:25 |

^ & ^^ thanks Alan and Steve. In both of your lists, Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here is a long-time favourite, and from Steve's list I love Miles Davis' In a Silent Way. That's the album that got me into Miles Davis. And I have liked Argus from Alan's list a lot.
For most of these categories I could easily make many lists, but with Neo-Prog, Progressive Metal and Tech/Extreme Prog Metal my choices become more limited. That said, I do know and like multiple albums in every category at PA and plan to make at least one more. Really interesting to see people's choices from the categories they use as well as being interested in what categories they exclude. |

I like to get an idea of people's tastes across the board so to speak. Below I have a favourite album from each PA category (well, other than the subcategory for various artists, samplers). What matters is that the act is in that category at Prog Archives. For instance, I would not describe Duster as Neo-Prog; Neo-Psych, yes.
If coming up with your list, cover as many categories in PA as possible or as many as you want to, and please try to see which category those albums actually reside in at this site. - Canterbury Scene: Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom (1974) - Crossover Prog: Anna von Hausswolff - The Miraculous (2015) - Eclectic Prog: Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts (1971) - Experimental/Post Metal: Boris - Flood (2000) - Heavy Prog: Morte Macabre - Symphonic Holocaust (1998) - Indo-Prog/Raga Rock: André Fertier's Clivage - Mixtus Orbis - Jazz Rock/Fusion: Herbie Hancock - Crossings (1972) - Krautrock: Dom - Edge of Time (1972) - Neo-Prog: Duster - Duster (2019) - Post-Rock/Math Rock: Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind (1996) - Prog Folk: Spirogyra - Bells, Boots and Shambles (1973) - Progressive Electronic: Franco Leprino - Integrati... Disintegrati (1977) - Progressive Metal: Diablo Swing Orchestra - Sing-Along Songs for the Damned & Delirious (2009) - Psychedelic/Space Rock: Message - From Books and Dreams (1973) - RIO/Avant-Prog: Art Zoyd - Le mariage du ciel et de l'enfer (1985) - Rock Progressivo Italiano: Area - Caution Radiation Area (1974) - Symphonic Prog: Bo Hansson - Sagan Om Ringen (1970) - Tech/Extreme Prog Metal: Voivod - Nothingface (1989) - Zeuhl: Magma - Kobaïa (1970) - Various Genres/Artists: Concept/Themed; Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice - Jesus Christ Superstar (1970) Tributes; Leader of the Starry Skies: A Tribute to Tim Smith Vol. 1 (2010) - Prog Related: David Bowie - Blackstar (2016) - Proto-Prog: The United States of America - The United States of America (1968) Note: I was thinking about having Serge Gainsbourg's Histoire de Melody Nelson for Prog Related, but he is not in. I remember adding him, but I see no record of ever having done do. Weird. Edited by Logan - December 16 2024 at 11:23 |
