I also never got the hype for The Mars Volta (similar to my view on Rush); their name suggests they should be doing something along the Space-rock or psych circuit, but sound like they get their rocks off on aimless racket and impenetrable noise! I wonder if they will tell you they're a partial jazz outfit too

Manfred Mann's Earth Band, first prog band I got into. Still love to listen to Nightingales & Bombers and various others.
Second are probably Mogwai (Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will). My machine offers lots of artists whose first name starts with M. Not sure how many with M family name I'm missing; curious to see what others list. PS somehow I missed Magma (MDK), which are about as strong as Mogwai in my collection.
