[QUOTE=ViolinCyndee][QUOTE=hegelec]

So, I pose the questions:

Do you play an instrument/sing? Yes to both.

If you play an instrument, which one?  Drums, percussion, keyboards.

Have you received training?  Nope.  I can proudly say...I'm TOTALLY self-taught.

How often do you often sing/play Progressive Rock?  Not lately (e.g.; the last 2 or 3 months.). I've been doing a LOT of writing lately, so when I sit down to play, it's to arrange the song.

What are your favourite songs to play?  Favorite songs?  Well, I'm biased, since they were the 1st rock I ever heard (1994).  So a bit of Rush, and more and more of my own material.

Some world views are spacious, and some are merely spaced...

I've been playing guitar and piano for 7 years. My band, which doesn't have an official name, is a Rush/Cream inspired band in our sound but we have long instrumental jams.

My favorite songs to play right now are:

Hemispheres
Jacob's Ladder
Exiles
Larks' Tongue in Aspic, part II

I've been playing bass for six years, almost by ear (I just had a very bad experience with cello lessons before...) but now I'm seriously () studying 'cause now I have not just one but two bands [an all-girl indie band where I also do the backing vocals and a rock-blues one]!!! I'm really happy, although I'd prefer a hard rock or prog band...

Ah, my fav songs to play:

  • A Perfect Circle, "Breña"
  • Tool, "Schism"
  • all MAdM songs
  • PT, "Strip the soul"
  • Pink Floyd, "Money"
  • ELP, "From the beginning" (i suppose the bass part is played with keyboards but I'm learning it anyway...)
  • Belle and Sebastian, "Like Dylan in the movies"

Yeah, I play guitar and keyboard in a power metal band with some prog influences. We'll hopefully have some stuff recorded soon; once we do, I'll post it on here.

Tomorrow, with some other musicians, I'm auditioning for my school's annual rock concert with a cover of Porcupine Tree's Blackest Eyes. I'll be playing guitar and singing; I've never done that before, so hopefully all will go well.

Yes, I play (and sing, somehow :D Somebody tells me that I should take some lessons for I have a beautiful voice, but...time...).

I play mainly keyboards, but sometimes even guitars.

I play in two bands: Elisena, a prog\gothic band (http://www.elisena.net, still on building), and Ordine Geometrico Demonstrata, a free progressive rock band (http://www.ogd-project.org click in the middle to download. Compose OGD-GOD-DOG-ODD anc click to enter the sections :D).

I am also working on two solo projects: ITEr (piano improvisations) and Redrumor (synthetic landscapes).

I have been playing for 11 years by now, taking lesson since 4 years ago (with an year passed studying guitar).

Regard to the last questions, I listen almost exclusively to progressive, and I play this genre in my bands, although my favorite song to play is Highway Star :D
With Elisena we play some self-written songs, along with a 35 minutes medley of DT songs, and something from Pain of Salvation, Sonata Arctica, Tool, Fear Factory and so on.

This is something of a bizzare thread; I'm not sure where to put it . . .

I've always wondered how many prog fans are musicians themselves and
what they play. The stereotype of the Prog world is that we are all cape-
wearing keyboardists who studied musicology with the Royal
Conservatory, but I'm sure this is not the case.

So, I pose the questions:

Do you play an instrument/sing? Yes

If you play an instrument, which one? Guitar

Have you received training? Yes from my guitar teacher

How often do you often sing/play Progressive Rock? Twice a week

What are your favourite songs to play? Don't play covers. My band only
plays original material.
One likes to believe
In the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless Compromises
Shatter the illusion
Of integrity

I play guitar, and bass pretty efficiently and I'm trying to get the keyboard and drums down. Like everyone else I make attempts to sing but could use some work. I took guitar lessons for about 3 years after teaching myself for about 5. During my instruction I was introduced to a certain albium called Close to the Edge. I didn't quite get it at the time but now it's one of my all time favorites. I play (or attempt play) prog all the time. My favorite stuff to play is Gentle Giant, Yes, Kansas, and Uriah Heep. The bggest influnce on my guitar playing is Ritchie Blackmore.

What are your favourite songs to play?--I detest playing covers and all the groups I have been in wrote and played original material.

Im in a band and we play quite funky, ska style music but i try to bring a proggy edge with my guitar as often as i can, So does our bass player, We're both big prog fans.

I play the guitar and the mandolin in the band. I've started to play the flute but we have'nt worked it into a song yet.

I play drums for 6 years now, and play in a rockband called ProzaQ.

www.prozaqband.com

I have 4 grades in drumming and 1 grade in keyboard as well.

Sometimes I play with friends in a band called 'Phoenix Project'. We've played 'Fanfare For The Common Man' some time ago.

I study jazz at home now. Terrific stuff! Like it a lot.

French Horn, eh?  Good choice!

So do play mostly Classical or Jazz?

Classical, but I have played jazz trumpet before
