Pekka Pohjola was absolutely amazing. Thank you for that.

A semi-similar situation I often am in is this. I work in a movie theatre, and sometimes get the closing usher shift. This entails sitting there until the last people leave at around 1:00 am. So I get a solid three to four hours in of having on my ipod and reading. I like the fact that I'm reading more now, and since I'm getting to listen to so much music whilst doing nothing else, I like expanding my listening boundaries and stepping away from what I hear far too often.
Also, I'm looking into something you posted, Pekka Pohjola. It struck me as very interesting, and I need more jazz fusion always. And now, reading up on it, I find myself even more interested. Zappa influenced music initially that moved more towards jazz fusion as time went on....I need this.

That was a good one to start with!
My commute to work takes about 1 1/2 to 2 hours each way, which includes a walk, train and subway / underground, so there's plenty of opportunity to listen to plenty of new albums. A lot of the time I'll kick off the journey by selecting a track at random, using the iPod shuffle facility, then I'll play the whole of the album that track came from. Other days I'll gancy a theme, such as a particular genre like Jazz Rock / Fusion, or music from a particular country / region. I also read whilst I'm listening to the music so I get through a load of books each year too. |

I both hate and love long drives like such. I hate sitting there doing nothing, but I've also noticed that it finally gives me a chance to listen straight through really good and rich albums without the possibility of someone talking or interrupting. For example, when driving two hours to a friends apartment I downloaded some never heard albums and checked them out. Il Balletto Di Bronzo-Ys was one of the best listening experiences I've ever had. It was loud, nobody was bothering me, and I got to soak it all in, while hearing how dynamic everything was.
Some people (in the household) just need to leave me the hell alone when I'm listening to music!

Given, I don't technically have a commute, but these were two I listened to in starts and stops over a relatively busy driving day:
(Caravan, first album, 1968) and (Epsilon, krautrock, 1971) Makes me kind of wish I had a commute, actually... |
