The "problem with prog metal" is simple: it sounds noisy, soulless and overproduced, almost as industrial music. It's the worst mix that I've known (between prog rock and metal).

I have friends telling me the same things you wrote (in bold) on several of the genres I am listening to, including Krautrock bands (which I disagree with, but it's their view which is legitimate such as yours).
I am your age and "still" find metal appealing (all sorts) as much as I still find Krautrock, and all other genres of prog appealing. You don't necessarily grow out of this, it's not always a phase.

Cheeky young monkey!

I like a lot of mainstream heavy metal along the lines of Metallica, and I love Rush's albums from AFTK through to Moving Pictures (which pretty much set the precedent for prog metal).

I'm also a huge fan of Japanese bands like Ruins and Koenjihyakkei - prog doesn't get much faster or more technical than that.

I don't think much of most prog metal because a lot of the time, for me, it's a combination that doesn't really work. Tool and Counter World Experience have both impressed me, but the likes of Symphony X, Dream Theater et al just leave me cold.

^ it's not meant to sound pleasant ...  prog also involves unpleasant sounds - rock, metal, any genre.

Yes but a distorted sound may be pleasant, which is never the case with metal "singing".

I don't see any difference between metal and so-called "prog" metal or the differences are very superficial IMO.

I like dark music!  But usually not music that sounds evil, I think there is a difference between the two.

I don't like rap, or commercial country, either. No big deal -- there's lots of other music out there (and on this site) for me. Smile

that's just the way it is Smile

I can see why many like PM, and consider it "progressive," but modern metal (including PM) is just too hard and fast  for me (and I generally can't relate to the lyrics).

the only problem with prog metal is that it is as real as any other prog X genre and this bothers some people for reasons only they know...
-music is like pornography...

sometimes amateurs turn us on, even more...

-sometimes you are the pigeon and sometimes you are the statue...

Not that many of the prog metal singers I have listened to scream into a microphone.  Sometimes they might, but not most of the time.

The closest thing to prog metal I listen too is Porcupine Tree, the only problem I really have with it is that it all sounds like forced to be epic over the top, which I don't like, and there's little variety in the sound. Also, I cannot stand most the vocals, and I can't understand why people would scream into a microphone.

Although, I do respect the musician ship. A lot of those guitarist/keyboardists have a lot of skill and there are unique structures and time signature's and whatnot, it's just not my thing.

I'm 100% with you on that stance, the nu-metal movement critically wounded good metal and the modern melodic and power metal movements finished it off and urinated on it's corpse.

Of course that's my rather vulgar and graphic opinion on the matter anyway, I'm such an 80's metal nerd =P

When I listen to progressive music it is mostly for just plain musical enjoyment and to take me away to a better place. I admit, I enjoy some Metallica, its a guilty pleasure of mine (the symphonic metal album) but I usually just listen to that to get the energy out of my system. So when it comes to listening to prog metal, I actually do think it is pretty good but I'll have to be in the right mood.

I find prog metal repetitious ... and I cannot truly explain why. It is simply a feeling of mediocrity I get... I must explain this somehow.
