4 stars 1997: ABC - Skyscraping - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nlzHNSZbY-KpVVXlCvOpfgz4FXiQUc-fE

Martin Fry had high hopes of success for ABC's seventh album - the first without founder member Mark White - but the album failed to climb the charts, somewhat ironically, although Stranger Things have happened. Geek

3 stars 1991: ABC - Abracadabra - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mfHgJUINJ_LksxLfCfsovkqop-zBnUGzI

As if by magic, ABC's sixth album appears, but founder member Mark White promptly disappears, saying "I've had enough of this" - meaning another ABC album full of House music dance grooves and techno sounds. Can't say I blame him for leaving. Stern Smile

3 stars 1989: ABC - Up - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lZIYypi1LGFZQj_BG-3W-NK_0jmjhz77o

Whereas we can all hope for One Better World, ABC were hoping for one better album, but they came Up with an album of House music instead. Confused

4 stars  1987: ABC - Alphabet City - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kr6AKI4GkBY6M65xdu1YQ99fmrHsgV9VQ

No surprise if ABC's highly danceable fourth album sounds elegantly Chic, as it's co-produced by none other than Bernard Edwards. Yowsah! Yowsah! Yowsah!

3 stars 1985: ABC - How to Be a Zillionaire - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lzO_89JNwhbMo9kea-8f9l_pPVCYN0ft8

The third ABC album, which is notable for not only including founder members Martin Fry and Mark White, but also includes two uncredited performers who made little or no musical contribution to the album, but were there merely to make up the numbers for promotional purposes. A bit like Boney M and Milli Vanilli then. Tongue

3 stars 1983: ABC - Beauty Stab - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_ncg-nDhyWWeryX7q6TkNx7BnoVTTjehPQ

ABC's largely forgotten second album, which has been called "the greatest career sabotage in pop music history", but it's really not that bad. Smile

The two singles released from the Beauty Stab album, the first of which includes the immortal lyric, "Can't complain, mustn't grumble, help yourself to another piece of apple crumble" - and Martin Fry wondered why the album flopped. Tongue

S.O.S. (not the ABBA classic) Smile

^ Thanks for giving those three bands a well-deserved mention. I've added them all to the list on Page 1. Shriekback reminds me of a little-known Synth-Pop duo called Seona Dancing, featuring a very young and trendy-looking Ricky Gervais. Smile

Ricky Gervais as he was then....

....and David Brent as he is now.

I really liked the '80s synthpop coming out of the UK, so there's a lot to unpack here for me.

Out of all the artists named here i think that Gary Numan is one who is still consistently putting out high quality stuff.

I know it's probably next to impossible to name everyone, however I do wonder where two of my favourite bands of that era fit in: Cabaret Voltaire and Shriekback.

I would also like to mention a one-off album by a group who named themselves Gardening by Moonlight. They only made one album but it's a cracker:

4 stars 1982: ABC - The Lexicon of Love - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_njQ-vtLtdr8lCUJvijX4QrS6Rf48QgtwA

Choosing my three favourite songs from The Lexicon of Love album is as easy as ABC. Smile

Synth-Pop Britannia

ABC       The first band on the A to Z list and the second most famous Synth-Pop band from the cosmopolitan city of Sheffield. Martin Fry & co. have been entertaining us now for over forty years with their sophisticated, highly danceable tunes, although I strongly suspect the only ABC album anyone remembers these days is their magnificent debut: The Lexicon of Love - an album I love with All of My Heart. If you can Show Me a better UK Synth-Pop debut than The Lexicon of Love, then you can shoot that Poison Arrow through my heart. Smile

 3 stars 2008: ABC - Traffic

^ Thanks. As if by Magic, I added the scintillating pop duo La Roux to the Synth Britannia listings a couple of days ago, although I wasn't sure whether to list them under "L" or "R". Ermm

"In For The Kill". La Roux are very retro synth pop. Smile

^ Thanks Logan. The bare bones, dark wave sound of Linea Aspera is quite appealing to me. That's another band to add to the collaborative A-Z list on the previous page. Thumbs Up

^ Then it's not available in your region.  It's "Wheels of Fortune" off Fad Gadget's Under the Flag.  I might try to edit in another embed.

A more modern one to mention that I really like but might not be so much to your tastes, Paul, is Linea Aspera.

^ I certainly would think so, Synth Pop and Synth Punk.  Of course some albums and songs could be considered more appropriate than others.

This is great, imo.

One I need to check out more.

^ Great suggestion! I just added Fad Gadget to the A-Z master list on Page 1, so they'll be coming up right after the Eurythmics and just before a Flock of Seagulls. Watch out for that seagull....

Could 'Fad Gadget' be included in Synth-Pop Britannia I wonder?

Signed to the 'Mute' label (Depeche Mode,Erasure) by Daniel Miller.

Definitely synth, poppy, but maybe a little bit darker? Smile
