Pastorius out of those. Was hoping to see Holger Czukay in there.

My favourite is Clive Mitten from Twelfth Night. He's made a couple of fantastic solo's never heard like any other bassist around.
Others include Percy Jones, Colin Bass, John Jowitt, Peter Gee, Greg Lake and that guy from Marillion and Transatlantic.

I picked Jaco, but I like listening to Paul McCartney for a great mix of melody and rhythm.

Mike Howlett undeservedly had no vote so far, so mine went there. I like how he expands simple rhythms into complex structures, like for example in "Isle of Everywhere".

No Tony Levin, Gary Thain and no John Entwistle?
This three are my top, but from the list a tie between Lake and Squire

How on earth can Tony Levin and Geddy Lee not be on here. Also Stanley Clarke and John Wetton.

This was before the hyperbass days, I think he was playing a Music Man StingRay fretless. |
Awesome that you got to see Montreux! I'm a fan of Barbara Higbie and Manring, primarily, and those two other guys are excellent, too. Check out Manring on the Bass Day '98 video. First time I saw a bassist use the freakin' EBow on his bass.

John Wetton will always be my favorite bassist...the work he did with Crimson '73-'74 was jaw droppingly amazing. From the list though, Squire.

Stanley Clarke. Why isn't he on the list? Return To Forever was seminal fusion.

Chris Squire from the list! If Geddy Lee or Nick Beggs were on the list, it might be a tougher call. Outside of the prog world, the Ox took some beating!
