Indeed, I had never heard of D'Alegria Custom Made basses before.
Thankyou for the links, very nice bass guitars indeed |

^Nice of you to remind me, Guigo. Early next year I may have some money to get a custom bass (if not, I'll have to settle for production, but still)...

Just for the record I work (in fact I was his boss until recently when he was promoted) with Daniel Alegria, owner and designer of D'Alegria Custom Made basses. I'm not a bass player but from what I've heard it's highly recommendable.

Ibanez make pretty decent 6 strings around that price range, i don't think anyone has mentioned them yet but a lot of people these days are dissing ibanez basses because they're very popular and seem to be associated with death metal (silly i know) but for the price you cant go wrong. Or the yamaha rbxjmii is really nice too.

Probably. I find the wide fingerboard of my five-string Fender to be a bit of a pain in the ass, but I'd rather have an overly wide fretboard than a bass I can't slap.

I guess such basses are primarily aimed at metalheads making little or no use of slap, but needing an easy to shred fingerboard. |

Not necessarily. Six strings tend to be really wide, but there are five strings with pretty slim necks, almost like wide fours.

Five- and Six-string basses all have really humongous necks.

A former co-worker has a custom made bass by the guy who designs Les Claypool's. Beautiful piece of art it is.
