for me, Somewhere Far Beyond is the starting point of a great trilogy Somewhere Far Beyond Imaginations from the other side Nightfall in Middle-Earth with the last being their ultimate masterpiece A Night at the opera was good too, not as impressive as Nightfall but their last one is quite a disappointment...

I would try In the Region of Summer Stars first, their best IMO and then Aerie Faerie nonsense.
Only owning A Time of Day by Anekdoten anyone recomend where to go next?

not bad at all, I would describe them as raw power metal with quite a few Helloween influences, mainly on the guitars I'm a big fan of the band, but these two would be around 3 to 3.5 stars each if you like to have sth from their first era, try "Tales from the Twilight World', much better (if you don't already have it)
|
I have their first three, plus Tokyo Tales now. Got all of them at a dirt cheap price
They're excellent, and they'll help me to get into more speed/power-metal (progressive or not).
|
so you've got everything until 1993... except for Somewhere Far Beyond? this is the album that BG started changing seriously into more proggy paths
|
If i would've won all the auctions i was bidding on, i would have all albums up to 1998

Great this thread has revived!
I'm thinking of buying a combo consisting of:
Rush - Chronicles (2 CD compilation)
Rush - Presto
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime II
The combo is actually very cheap and I've never heard Queensryche before (and I predict this isn't a good starting point).
Opinions are welcomed! |
Operation Mindcrime is OK. Not so crazy about it myself. I suggest the album Empire, for starters. It has the songs Silent Lucidity, Empire and Jet City Woman. Their breakthrough album, if you're talking about their hits. Or you can always try Pomised Land. It's their best work in my opinion. Compilations are always good if you haven't got the complete or most of the band's discography.

An album or 2 from Rhapsody is alright. it will make no diffrence if you buy the whole discography coz it will all sound just the same, like most power metal bands. I remember when I a had a short phase of liking bands like Heavenly, Stratovarius, Hammerfall etc. I grew tired of listening to them coz of monotony. Though I still enjoy listening to some Stratovarius, Edguy, and Hammerfall, but not as much as I used to. I sold most of my power metal purchases, glad someone bought it for a fair price.
totally agreed, these particular bands are ok if you hear 1 or 2 albums, the rest will sound boring as you said (I have been through this phase and can't go back...)
This is my curiosity list:
Anything form Procol Harum, Nektar, Ulver and Post Metal/Avant Garde/Experimental Metal bsnda. I'm thinking Ulver. I hope they won't bore me.
do yourself a favour and but Ulver's Themes... it will change the way you listen to music! check my review on the album and see if you like it, it's not very metal but it's as dark as it gets... I have another 2-3 albums by them, but this one is a hell of a masterpiece

First of all: Thanks for replying to this thread!
I think you should start with Operation Mindcrime from 1988, since it's alot better. But if Operation Mindcrime II is cheap, you could always try it.
Don't know about the Rush ones, i've never really got into them. |
I have not got into Presto yet, need to listen it several times to form an opinion OMII is ... Not very bad but it can hardly go beyond 3 start IMHO... if you have heard OMI you will be disappointed

Thought i would post in this thread again. Here's my new Curiosity List:
- Rhapsody - Legendary Tales
- Rhapsody - Symphony of Enchanted Lands
- Rhapsody - Dawn of Victory
- Rhapsody - Rain of a Thousand Flames
- Sieges Even - Lifecycle
- Sieges Even - A Sense of Change
- Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry
- Fates Warning - No Exit
- Fates Warning - Paralelles
- Porcupine Tree - Up The Downstair
- Porcupine Tree - Signify
- Porcupine Tree - The Sky moves Sideways
- Traffic - The Low Spark of the High Healed Boys
- Blind Guardian - A Night at the Opera
And ever growing...
|
wow, that's a long list let's see... I don't have all Rhapsody albums and I would not recommend anyone to buy them. They seem too cheesy for me, even if they have some good elements and ideas. Mainly symphonic speedy power metal that you get tired after a while (IMO). You could try Legendary... or Symphony... to get a taste. I have heard that their latest is probably the best, not very typical power metal like the rest BJ said a lot about Sieges Even, I would agree. Their first one is thrashy, closer to Watchtower sound, tech-metal with weird tunes. At least 3 stars. A Sense of Change is a masterpiece, highly recommended. Fates Warning: all of them are at least excellent albums. Perfect Symmetry is perfect, Parallels is more commercial but still excellent, No Exit is more powerish but with grand moments. All highly recommended for prog-metal. Again I would recommend all PTree, Up... and Sky.. are more 'psychedelic'/space rock, very deep and sophisticated. Signify is the turn to harder tunes but still has the touch of Floyd in it. At least 4 stars for each one. Traffic (the only one I don't know) BG, a night at the opera, first was a bit of a disappointment, but after careful listening is very good, not as good as Nightfall... or Imaginations... but still good and operatic phew.... a few thoughts

Okay, sound good! I have no problem with Blind Guardian, so i think i might see something about Rhapsody that i'll like. I won't buy them full-priced, though
