From Hair to Curved Air, Sonja Kristina's career has been one heck of a Roller Coaster ride. |

For me Curved Air became dated regarding specific keyboard settings that were commonly used in those times...along with the usage of a Wah Wah pedal which aside from Hendrix..I was never particularly fond of. I love Curved Air but I must have the mindset or I won't bother.
Their music could be mysterious and with the addition of sound effects it got my attention in the 70s. "You Keep Looking Over Your Shoulder" was a bit eerie and impressionable. I liked their rhythmical ideas. "Melinda (more or less) is a hauntingly beautiful Folk song which is totally up to par with bands like Mellow Candle and Pentangle . Curved Air transform into a European Folk band in Melinda. ...while the rest of the material on Phantasmagoria differs from it extremely. Their are sections of the Vivaldi take that are reminiscent of how King Crimson sounded with David Cross. Air Conditioning felt like a collection of odd songs. The song "Stretch" has a kind of shuffle groove . The chord vamping during the verse reminds me of Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore and I can definitely hear Ian Gillian singing this...although Curved Air have their own distinctive sound. The song "Screw" is truly odd. Curved Air possessed this darkside made more prominent on songs like "Piece Of Mind" . "Everdance" is timeless to me. Other bands of those times that had these kinds of leanings were Gracious, Rare Bird (particularly on As Your Mind Flies By), The first two Gentle Giant albums, Lucifer's Friend on the songs "Mother" and "Where The Groupies Killed The Blues "...and "Rose On The Vine" all were part of a formula in Progressive Rock during the early 70s. Curved Air developed a very unique style of their own. Even the early Van Der Graff Generator with songs like "Killer" . The difference in Curved Air being the sound of a woman's voice and the monster playing of Way and Monkman. |

^ To be honest, I think Curved Air would've sold more records if they'd featured lovely Sonja Kristina on every album cover. After all, it never did Blondie's album sales any harm to feature Debbie Harry on every album cover. Not that that had any bearing on me buying their albums.

Hi, I've never looked at a woman singing as some kind of sex symbol, which was the "thing" for a lot of pop music in the 60's ... making the women and the songs sexier, and you knew that half of it was fake, and just advertising. I personally find it sickening, no different than the media wanting the Moody blues to look like clean boys from the psychedelic days, all the way past the 70's with all the videos and shows having the pretty boy image of dress and looks ... it was rather pathetic, and an image that was pretty stupid in my book! It didn't matter to me that SK was a bunny, was naked on stage ... so what? It's the musicianship that mattered and in many ways, she stood out because DW and FM could not get past their differences, and she didn't care ... she still sang, regardless. Reminds me of Renate ... nobody is going to think of her as a "symbol" of anything, although I would probably think (she might stare at me for a while!!!!) that she was "left over" from the commune idealistic thing in Germany and she did not like or appreciate being taken by everyone in the commune when things go crazy, and all the dope shows up ... and it becomes all phallic night for all men! It's never been about "sex symbol", though like so many of us, I enjoyed looking at Playboy or Penthouse, but after a while they were all "carbon copies" and looked very plastic! There was no "personality" behind it and the "shots" were all the same, as the positions. For media/advertising reasons, it could be said that the symbol idea is important, but in many ways, Sonja already had the stage presence ... naked or not ... that she picked up in HAIR ... which made her realize that musicianship was not the only thing that mattered, something that obviously both DW and FM had a serious issue with ... probably for a good reason, but honestly, if I am going to sit here and mention the 5 violinists I enjoy the most, DW would not be one of them. I don't think that she felt that being naked on stage, or being a bunny was "unimportant". I think she would say ... so what? It was a part of my being able to learn how to get staged and attention ... and she would not, I don't think, specially say it was unimportant ... even considering that later she ended up married to a bigger person than she could imagine, which likely helped her continue the band, when others dropped out. Nothing is "unimportant", and things tend to sort themselves out as a part of the whole. And that's how I look at it ... and it is very visible in a lot of other work done by many other artists. |

Curved Air Second Album and Phantasmagoria are my favorites. I love the way Sonja Kristina sings "Jumbo". "Everdance" is another song that is interesting.

That's true, but only for the purposes of my review. I don't usually pay that much attention to song lyrics, especially if they're not written down in front of me.

Something else, I noticed, is that you've paid very good attention to the lyrics when listening to this album. |

That's ironic, considering Francis Monkman was a member of the claasically-minded band Sky.

Hi, The only thing missing here, is that Sonja Kristina, was not just another name or singer. She had been a part of the original HAIR show in London (1968), and you know who she was married to in the long run, when the brother ended up managing The Police. (Stewart and Miles). But, being an actress/singer is not likely to stop a woman's dreams ... and it didn't as she was able to head up the band Curved Air. The two main in it, Darryl Way and Francis Monkman were (supposedly) at odds with each other a lot, as Darryl was more classically minded and Francis wanted to free form a lot more according to one article around. Strangely enough, Francis helped Darryl in 1978's Concerto album for Darryl. |

Hi, You know ... some 45 years later, all I can remember is how much of this "new music" Guy Guden NEVER MISSED in his Space Pirate Radio show. Such a wonderful piece!

That recent one I mentioned that I have (but haven't gotten around to listening to yet) is called North Star. There's a few covers and remakes on it.

One of my favorite bands. I've always known about the song "Backstreet Luv" and have loved it ever since I heard it, but I think I never checked out their other stuff because they were advertised the least, in comparison to other 70s prog, and wish I would have known about them when I was 18, so I could have seen them in concert.

Lovechild is my favourite studio album, but my favourite Curved Air album overall is the recent compilation "The Curved Air Family Album", featuring all of the best songs from the individual band members, which reminds me, I'll have to give it another listen again Soon. 2019: The Curved Air Family Album - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_TaS3ukydpLE97GWJCiuvXxJNC82Q1x- Edited by Psychedelic Paul - November 05 2022 at 11:56 |

Unfortunately I don't know this band very well. I have one of their most recent albums but haven't played it yet (the problem when you have thousands of cds). I know the songs "back street luv" and "it happened one day" and not much else (until I listen to that recent one that is supposed to be good).

Very interesting and enjoyable read, and curiously enough, I maybe seem to feel here your in some ways more "conservative tastes" in your perception of side 2, which I think of as less "crazy"/out there than you do, even "only in a good way".
