the stranglers' piece "down in the sewer" from their 1977 debut album a prog piece?

it is an 8 minute piece with 4 parts to it, as described on the back sleeve. if anyone knows it - give your opinion.

If 'The Mars Volta' are prog then so were 'The Stranglers', and they were much better at it aswell!

New sub-genre: Prog-Punk?

Seriously, though, 'No More Heroes' and 'Golden Brown' are the business.

The Stranglers are Punk, pure Punk and nothing but Punk.

Hope no sentimental guy is trying to add them because he found his wife or a girlfriend with a song by them.

If 'Queen' can be on here than why not 'The Strangler's'? JJ Burnell's bass playing is awesome & Dave Greenfield plays a mean Hammond! Their first two albums cetainly have prog elements, something that I don't hear on Queen albums!

Not really punk, although they had a few punkish songs. Not prog either though!

I think they were Punk, Snow Dog, albeit the 'intelligent' end of the genre. But they were certainly not Progressive Rock. Nevertheless some of their music was, as I said above, the business. Great band and a breath of fresh air at the time (along with several other Punk bands). I had a great time listening to Punk bands - and going to Punk band concerts - in the late 1970s.

Snowdog

Definitely punk (I loved 'em), until Golden Brown - with a biochemist (who enjoyed his biochemicals) and a kung-fu chef, fronting the band -  what a mix

Dave Greenfield was a bit of a 'progger' like Jon Lord in Deep Purple. That's were there prog sound came from.Siouxsie and The Banshees were also quite prog in some respects. Both good bands. The rest of punk was boring sh*t.

I think it's obvious Fitzcarraldo, whenever a person feels sentimentally attached to any not Prog' band they inmediately start a lobby to include them in the Archives.

I think we've all seen that a lot lately.

The Clash had their moments too, 'Complete Control' is an awesome rock song! I know Mick Jones listened to Yes & ELP, I read it in a bio somewhere!

To all who say that The Stranglers were a Punk band, I still say no! They were around a long time before Punk came on the scene, and Lucked out when the Punk thing happened. Sure they go some Punkey moments, but it sure ain't "propper" Punk.

There album the Men in Black is Certainly not "punk". They have switched from punk to art rock is what I would say.

Whether or not you think it was Punk, it made for great pogoing! "Whatever happened to Leon Trotsky, He got an ice pick, that made his ears burn..."

Intelligent new wave/punk, I wouldn't say they're prog.

Funny you should mention it, but I have an old issue of Hit Parader featuring a “Favourite Albums” list by members of the Stranglers. It’s all prog and Krautrock stuff like Camel’s The Snow Goose, albums by NEU! and La Düsseldorf, etc. Proof that The Meninblack et al didn’t just come out of a vacuum.

I definitely disagree. The Stranglers were very wrongly labelled "punk"; their music has very little to do with it. They even use real polyphony in some of their songs, and whatever has that to do with the three-chord philosophy of punk? They were much closer to prog than to punk.
