Topic: Dream Theater - "A Dramatic Turn Of Events" Posted: September 04 2011 at 12:44
Well, it happened....... shhh....
This album is going to be sick. Easily their best album since Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, but I honestly think it will surpass both that and Scenes From A Memory. There is a lot going on and I'll be buying it the day it comes out. From what I'm hearing from others online, this album beats out every other Rudess-era album by a large margin.
This album comes out in 8-9 days; depending on where you live. Anyone else excited?

I have no idea what you're talking about when you say that whatever happened happened, because of course nothing happened! I would comment on how refreshing this album is compared to the last decade of Dream Theater music, but of course it hasn't legally come out yet, so I won't do that.
I would state that while I really loved Black Clouds and Silver Linings, this album sounds like it's going to blow it out of the water with the complex melodies, rhythms, and song structures that flow together really well. I'd even commend Jordan Rudess for sounding VERY restrained, actually using real PIANO, and for even sounding semi similar to Kevin Moore at times, while only bringing out the continuum once or twice that I noticed... I'd probably say that I'm pleased with Petrucci going back to his jazzier solo fills while still maintaining his shredding edge; for playing more emotional solos instead of just in-your-face shredding.
I WOULD say all of that, but of course the album hasn't come out yet, so I can't say any of that. I just have to wait for my pre-order to get shipped to me before I can say any of that.
Dream Theater has churned out some great prog metal albums in the 2000's, but had I been listening to this album for the past 7 or 8 hours, which of course I haven't been because it isn't out yet, I would say that it sounds like a nice blend of prog rock and prog metal. Enough of their old school roots but still with a modern flare...
I'm sure that when this album comes out, I'll say all of these things and much more!

Yes, I've heard things about the album, that's what I was referring to.
I also loved BC&SL when it came out; I thought it was a return to form, though the lyrics were a little 'eh'. But this new album smokes!!! It combines some elements of old DT with new DT, but I said that about Black Clouds when it came out. With ADTOE, there's some new element that I can't put my finger on yet. I think it's the level of intensity, and progressiveness. This is honestly the album many casual DT fans have been waiting for IMO.
And Andyman, I beg to differ; I think this album is IT!!! And I'm not just saying cause it's the new album; I thought BC&SL was their best since Six Degrees, but didn't top it or Scenes. This one really does sound absolutely amazing.

The main difference I would have heard in this album if it had already been released is that it's UPBEAT! DT hasn't had many upbeat songs that get people moving lately unless they're meant for headbanging. This album has that energetic feel to it, or at least it will when it has been released because obviously none of us have listened to it yet.

After a couple of listens, it's their best since Six Degrees. For the first time since then they use metal sparingly and for effect not just because they can.
There's some real emotion in a couple of the songs too, something that been pretty sparse in the last few albums. Mangini does a good job at sounding like Portnoy did, but fresh enough that we know it's not him.
The only gripe I have is Rudess' horrible synth choices. I'm starting to get used to them though.

What the deuce?
I like how everyone is stuck on the metal being less prominent now that Portnoy left. This album like everything else they've done, has tons of metal as well as the "ballad" and softer tracks. More specifically there's still the über heavy n' ultra clunky nu/corish metal riffs with those obnoxious Zakk Wylde pinch harmonics of the more recent records.
Petrucci programmed the drums and made Mangini play what he wrote so he could sound like Portnoy, which is lame. MM could have brought something new to the band, but instead he comes off as a completely forgettable replacement guy.
Much hype from the dramatic turn of events for a not so dramatic result. It will be interesting to see folks' evened out perception about ADToV once the next record drops, and who knows, maybe by then Petrucci will let Mangini off his leash.

They riffs are just as heavy on this one (I would say the riffs are some of their most brutal), but the overall vibe is a lighter and more intricate. I couldn't believe some of the patterns and time meters they used. But mostly, it's their most melodic album in quite a while.

Such is life in PA.
Such is life in all of musicdom. PA just need to board the 2003 train and realize antagonizing people who download is dumb. Maybe PA doesn''t agree with it, but it is the way of the future and we should probably stock sticking out heads in the sand about it.

No matter if the album leaked or not, I have all intentions of purchasing it.
I still say there are perks to checking out a leak, as much as I am mostly against doing it myself these days. However, It allows you to see if you will enjoy an album. It's when people ONLY download illegally and never purchase, then something is wrong.

That's what happens in 90% of the cases, braw.
Look, I'm also all to allowing people to freely share information, but I do believe there is a site regulation prohibiting people from even talking about leaks.
