Sankara is a rock band based in South Wales founded in 2010 by Gareth Jones, Vinden Wylde (formerly of The Reasoning), Jay MacDonald and Rhayn Jooste (formerly of Bluehorses).
WHO ARE SANKARA?
Once upon a time there was a Welsh folk-goth-psychedelic-metal band called Bluehorses. They released five albums, 2 live videos/dvds and played lots of folk and rock festivals all over Europe. The band ended in 2008, leaving guitarist Jay MacDonald & bassist Rhayn Jooste to look for something else to do. In 2009 a progressive rock band called the Reasoning decided to part ways with... their co-lead vocalist / keyboard player Gareth Jones and drummer Vinden Wylde. Gareth and Vinden were founder members and played on the first two Reasoning albums as well as on numerous tours. Gareth and Jay were old friends, having played together in various local bands over the years. Jay had also helped out as a guitarist for the Reasoning on a European club tour after Bluehorses imploded. Jay and Gareth started writing songs together during late 2009 / early 2010. They realised they had better get a band together so called in Rhayn and Vinden as Sankara's rhythm section. Effectively this means that, while Sankara is an entirely new band with no current ties to either Bluehorses or the Reasoning, all four members of the group have extensive experience in the music industry from playing the floors of pubs up to headlining festivals in front of 10,000 people. Imagine Lady Gaga getting gang-banged in a lift by the Deftones while Keith Richards and Lemmy sip tea and watch from the sidelines. That's a great image, isn't it? Unfortunately Sankara sound almost nothing like that. What they do sound like, however, is a '70's influenced rock band with melodic pop sensibilities who occasionally like to get slightly progressive. Perhaps the Killers channelling Led Zepplin or Elton John fronting UFO? I'm sure you get the idea. One of the defining principles laid down when the band formed was that there shouldn't be a generic or homogeneous Sankara songwriting style. The songs and overall band sound will naturally evolve because of the individual sounds and playing styles of Gareth, Jay, Rhayn and Vinden.
