Topic: Favorite Dream Theater era? Posted: June 10 2005 at 21:32 |
Easy one!
I go for 1989 - 1994 since that is the most "DT-like" era and the albums are more even, IMO.
What do you think?

1999 - Present.
I really liked the Moore-Era Material, but technically I think Jordan Rudess is a much better keyboard player, and as I have my metal background, I'm digging all the virtuoso stuff they throw at us.

Nothing can compare to Images and Words/Awake. So I voted 1989-1994. Plus A Change of Seasons was actually written in 1989 anyway.

1989 - 1994. I&W and Awake period was the best. I'd have Moore back and have another I&W come out.

The last two albums are good, but i don't love em the way I love SFAM and SDOIT (my two favorites).

I feel the only period Dream theater was really ground braking and did
music from the heart was the Moore era, the three first albums. If it
were not for this era, I would consider DT as "just" a good progmetal
band. None of the recent albums have been my best cup of tee, even
though they are very good.
It's totally natural with a band like DT that some like the older ones
more and some like the newer ones, as is evident in the poll results.
Just compare the first and last albums, is it really the same band?
What a long journey the band has been on!

I also prefer the '89-'94 era. I really don't like their newer stuff.

I wonder if there is a difference in musical taste between the fans of
the early days and the late days? What do you guys who like Train of
Tought listen to? And what about you Awake guys?

Intresting point Progzilla. I grew up with heavy, and surrended later to the realms of prog, with helps to develope a very tolerant ear, so I hear pretty much everything, I do not discriminate between music genres.
I find Awake amog the best DT have made, and more original and darker (in a very atmospherical and lyrical way) than train of thoughts (which has it's own taste and is very good too).

I like the era of Dream Theater when Labrie doesn't sing and Petrucci actually does something interesting.

Haha! Yes, I feel the same. The only track that LaBrie has sounded
impressive to me was on an audition track I have on a special treasure
CD (=bootleg ) from the early days. Apparently it impressed the band too!

I too have ventured in the 70s prog era and liked it alot, and like
Awake much more than Tot. Could we get some ToT fans to share their
musical taste?
