i just wanted to let everyone know about the zunes and how badass they are.
for $15 a month you get unlimited music downloads, although you have to keep paying every month in order to keep them but in addition for the price of $15 you can get 10 songs to keep for ever.Another amazing addition to the zune is the fact that it has built in wifi (not for viewing the web sadly) for downloading music from the zune marketplace, another function that can be used with the wifi is wirelessly syncing your music

i have a 120G zune and i have yet to encounter any problems.

here is a link to the zune devices and as you can see they are much cheaper than ipods
http://www.zune.net/en-US/mp3players/default.htm

here is a link to a free trial of the zune marketplace for 14 days
http://www.zune.net/en-US/software/zunepass/default.htm

hope you guys like it

No one ever buy one. Ever.

I wonder what the average price you pay for your favourite songs will be if you keep this up for 10 years... anyway - is there any point to this thread?

I'm on my third player and it's an 80 gig Zune.  I think it's getting on at least a couple of years old.  I've found it to be reliable and I like it.  If I were to warn anyone away from a player, it would be Toshiba Gigabeat.  Their support was lousy and it quit working on me well before it should have.  They have a newer generation out now.  I can't speak to those.  Also my first, a Creative Labs Zen also croaked on me prematurely.Angry  (ribbit LOL)

As far as Zune marketplace goes, I can't attest.  Most of my stuff is ripped from my CD collection.  I've also added videos from my enhanced CDs.  And I've downloaded some videos from You Tube.  There's several programs out there that allow you to download and convert.

My advice to anyone considering getting a player for the first time is to hold out as long as you can, because they keep getting cheaper and higher capacity.  When I got my first I was kind of thinking that I would only use it for traveling.  Now I'm completely hooked and wouldn't be without one. LOL

Hard to tell if the original post is spam or shameless plug.  I'm willing to give out benefit of the doubt.

Having had a 4th Gen iPlod for many years, I've changed over to an Archos 5 - it's a brilliant little box that can plug into my AV system, playback video and record programmes straight to its 250Gb hard disc; it's also wifi enabled and can stream from my PC and the interweb and has a USB I/F for playing stuff of USB sticks. The PC interface is as easy as pie and doesn't lock me into any proprietry software like iTunes.

What?

Are you still hanging on to the iPlod for supplemental use?  Have not heard or the Archos before.

the iPlod's 40G harddisc was temperamental and unreliable, so I removed it and replaced it with a 4G flash drive - the smaller drive can't hold my collection but it is useful for using in the car if I pre-load it with stuff I want to hear.

Wow, I might have to trade in my iPod.  Looks like this now supports OGG/FLAC as well, and is Linux compatible.

Hmm...

...reflects what you get ... with a bit of margin for being the only 250G media player available (and for being French probably Wink). Of all those I looked at the Archos is the only one you can actually watch a movie on with any degree of comfort - as a mp3 player it's an over-kill.
