Topic: All French Appreciation Thread! Posted: January 09 2009 at 18:56 |
All right, we got Italy and German threads, how about one for the French!
Personally, I feel that French rock from the 70's is awesome! And much underappreciated.
Some of my favorites:
Magma--of course!
Ange
Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes
Mallicorne
Ys
Mona Lisa
And others will come to mind.

Very Magma related - One Shot, outstanding zeuhl fusion.
Of course the chamber prog masters Art Zoyd need to be mentioned as well.
Then something I've been really into lately, one of the original RIO bands Etron Fou Leloublan.

Ange & Trust rule the French rock world. After that, apart from a few acts like Magma, the scene matches RPI for one shots. Only that they have a more active current scene.

French Prog made up the bulk of my listening for a long time, and still makes up the bulk of my collection. I suppose that Art Zoyd and Magma had the biggest impact on me.
There are too many great ones to mention, but a few excellent classic ones not yet mentioned are Hellebore, Heldon and Igor Wakhevitch. And for a modern one, Volapuk is excellent.

They most certainly are. We should also mention Sotos and Zaar, two other excellent avant bands. Another on the zeuhl front is Francois Thollot.

For me, just a few names: Magma Ange Artcane (I really like their Odyssee album even if it's sometimes too inspired by King Crimson) Arachnoid

Of course, Magma, Heldon... But also Etron Fou Leloublan (I spent the last whole evening listening to the "Diapason du Père Ubu" of their drummer Guigou Chenevier). I would also include E Pericolo Sporgersi, Familha Artus, Lard Free, Komintern.

HA! Nobody messes with Tszirmay when it comes to French prog....I shant even entertain the thought. I have a feeling he could pump out another list ten times that long if he wanted to.

Let me add that France is the one country that has never dissappointed me with their prog output. When I see a French prog disc, I get it. No questions asked. Listening to the new Nemo album now and not at all unhappy with it.

For once I think we should have a country appreciation thread with a less awkwardly worded title.
