Topic: Reflections on 2008 and a look beyond……. Posted: December 14 2008 at 17:19 |
The year kicked off with a double barrel shot of power and mystery with Ayreon’s 01011001! This album dominated the first half of the year! An album worthy of one of the best catalogs on Earth!
Then Coldplay and The Verve took us through the summer of 2008!
Nick and the boys from Pendragon ruled the fall.
We close the year with another epic two disc masterpiece welcoming a cold, economically fatigued world, to come into the Garden from Unitopia!
As fans, we should be grateful. Prog is back…..and big time. When do you remember two major double albums in the same year? I thought most bands had given the idea up….years ago!
As the Verve say, “I sit and wonder..” what will come next year!
Arjen is already hard at work on his new concept. (What a work ethic!)
Sylvan sounds like they are heading to the studio in February.
Nick is working on ideas for the follow up to Pure.
U2 is promising to take their music where it hasn't been before....that sounds progressive to me....
Just don’t forget guys, what Rush said, “All the World’s a Stage”, or was that Mr. Shakespeare?
On the West Coast of the USA we await the opportunity to see all of you live!
All hail the return of prog!
Let the show begin!

Don't forget the Bedlam in Goliath by the Mars Volta, which ranks as one of my favorite releases of all time. Absolute perfection. Oh, and the year's not over yet.

Well, that's hopeful of me anyway. I'm not 100% sure it will be
released in time of the end of the year. I really want it to though;
I've had the album completed for months.
I do know at least one other possible album to be released this year as well.

Let's also not forget about a killer effort from Frost* and debuts like Amaseffer and Ephrat, bother of which sufficiently rocked my world.

AGH!!! Mekhlin and Godsticks also put out two killer EPs, but I think '09 will be the time for them to shine

I was expecting both Elvis and Sid Vicious to rise from the dead and do a kick ass version of " My Way " but it didn't happen. This gives me something to look forward to with optimism in 2009.

Hopefully they'll be taking their music somewhere far far away from where I can hear it. What would be truly 'progressive' for U2, would be a gig on the Moon. Perhaps a permenant residency there..
They can take the f ing Kaiser Cheifs and the bloody Kooks with em!

Except for the Opeth, Mars Volta, and Cynic releases, I've found this year to be a disappointment, especially in comparison to '07. Although '09 is already looking to be fairly promising, so I'm certainly excited about that.

I'm still trying to figure out whether that album even exists ... I've never seen it in a store.

ahem... Cynic's "Traced In Air" anyone? Sure, it ain't a concept album and it ain't two discs, but anyone who says that it isn't a prog album needs to go re-sit their prog GCSEs. God I hope I don't have to wait another 15 years for them to bring out their next album... I would probably turn masochistic.
