Some people like Italian cuisine and others like Greek while still some like both. I guess there is even a group who don't like either. When it comes to your music, does it really matter what anyone else thinks, or do you feel you need input from others? This vs that or that vs this and on and on it goes. The old Dream Theater polls come to mind.

When it comes to 'your' prog, do you really give a rats bottom end what others think, or are you curious as to what your fellow prog fans boys/girls have to say?

Well, I don't obsess over how other people view the music I love. I do sort of feel bemused by the X vs. Y pollsters here who definitely seem to worry that way.

...but having spent time investigating music for myself the desire to discuss it comes naturally.

While I may or may not enjoy what others feel or think about music, it's more important how the artists are able to move me or impact my senses.  Metal is not my cup of tea, but I'm open to listening to it.  While I prefer more melodic tones, that shoudln't impact how anyone else feels about what moves/motivates them.  I believe that's why it's called a taste!

The only reason I care whether someone likes the same music is so that I may find new music. If someone on this sight (or any other) has the same taste in music, I can check their reviews and try some of the things they like. I have found many groups that would not have crossed my path otherwise.
Vinyl just sounds better!!

That's very true and I often use the same criteria you describe when looking for new music.
