Images and Words and Scenes from a memory are the most common answers you will get. Albums like Awake, Train of Thought, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Octavarium are also good ones to try out, maybe after you've listened to those first two if you want.

As already mentioned, Images and Words would be the prudent choice to start with, but I also think after listening to the former as well Metropolis pt.2: Scenes From a Memory, that you pick up Falling Into Infinity. But that's me, I guess . . .

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Images & Words.

I started to listen to them after hearing Scenes From A Memory and i still think that this album is far better than the others. Before hearing SFAM i didn't realy liked them and i couldn't undestand what they have to do with prog and recognized them only as a metal band.

Scenes From A Memory was my first. I'd go with that or Images And Words. Maybe even Octavarium, as well.

The debut has really poor sound quality and IMO opinion Charlie Dominici was nowere near as good a singer as LaBrie is. Images And Words is definatly the best place to start and then Scenes From A Memory. Octavarium and Falling Into Infinity are their worst albums, though, IMO so dont buy them until you like what you here from the rest of their stuff.

Images and Words is the one you should get. If you like it, buy Awake
aswell, and maybe Metropolis Pt.2. The only essential DT album,
however, is Images and Words.

Man, I have zero problem with Falling Into Infinity. A little unsure why it gets hammered all of the time.

Well, there's 'You not Me', co-written by Desmond Childs (you know, that co-writer with Bon Jovi???), there's also 'Hollow Years' ( ) and, worst of all 'Analy'... oops, i mean 'Ana Lee'. Three over cheesy tracks. The rest of the album is great though, I must admit. 'New Millenium', 'Lines in the Sand', 'Hell's Kitchen', 'Under Peruvian Skies' are all DT classics to me.

Start from the beginning, but not the VERY beginning. Images and Words is my favorite. It's their "second" album, but it's their first with singer James LaBrie.
