I suppose this is kind of arbitrary and random since a few other bands could be here also such as Eloy, Spock's Beard, etc.

I like random and arbitrary, and just to be contrary, I'm voting for IQ this time.

IQ.
Although I don’t REALLY know all the bands well enough to vote! But even if I did it would still be IQ! |

how do you compare IQ and GG?
different eras, different style... voting would be pointless for me

I keep saying I'm gonna make a silly poll like a proto-prog band vs a progressive death metal one. I'm curious how many people would scold me.

You don't have to compare them. You just have to (if you want to) vote for your favorite.

Only GG and Flower Kings in the running here. Gentle Giant are a band I loved a lot when I first got into prog and I listened to all 8 of their classic albums plus the missing piece. But I almost never listen to them anymore, can't say why, but after I worked my way through their discography they kind of faded from my mind.
Flower Kings, I've only ever loved two albums (Space Revolver and Sum of No Evil) despite having listened to a lot by now. But most of the stuff they release is just totally missable/forgettable. Despite this, because they keep releasing stuff and I always give it at least one or two spins, they feel more front of mind. But despite that I can't remember any song that's not on those two albums. So ultimately I'll give it to GG. Octopus, Power and the Passion and Acquiring the Taste outdo the two Flower Kings albums I actually enjoy, by quite a bit.

Gentle Giant. While sitting at a red light I got bombarded by homonyms from the car in the next lane.

Too bad for Banco that Gentle Giant is an option as well. But those are the two bands I love out of these. The former a little more than the latter.

I understand the point you make, but... what I can say is that over the course of their discographies, I prefer IQ to say Arena or Pendragon... I prefer Spock's to Flower Kings.... I prefer ELP to Triumvirat.... when it comes to GG, I really don't know anyone I can compare their music with, but I'd be happy to learn!

For me, I'd order them Flower Kings, IQ, ELP, Gentle Giant, Banco.
Banco gets the short-end of the stick mostly because I am not that familiar with them, and I have difficulty listening to bands with non-English vocals. Call it a personal quirk.
