Topic: Windows 10...? Posted: December 01 2015 at 09:11 |
I keep getting asked to upgrade on my computers to Win 10.....is it worth it...is it better than the previous versions and what about all the talk that it's more intrusive regarding keeping personal info on one..?

it's not worth it, whatever you may have right now is just as good if not better.

I think there are no significant changes between 8.1 and 10. Yes, it's quite intrusive if you install with the default settings. On my home PC I have 7 and I won't upgrade since it's working fine and the hardware is a bit old.

Both my sons have upgraded their laptops. One with the older laptop worked fine, the one with the almost new laptop had problems - the upgrade completed but the laptop ground to a halt to such an extent that we couldn't even run the backout to Windows 8 option. After much struggle we managed to restore the laptop from a recovery point.
So be warned. It's fine when you've upgraded but there is a slight risk involved.

No.
7 is getting the same spyware updates but at least you should be able to block the Microsoft hosts without a hardware firewall. Edited by Vompatti - December 01 2015 at 11:37 |

Can I use it to run older games like Civilisation III or Alpha Centauri that I wasn't able to launch under my Windows 8.1? I'd really like to play them again... What software sould I use for that? |

Thanks for the info...I'm running Win 8.1 and it seems fine so no Win 10 for me right now.
I also heard that eventually they are going to make it so you have to update to 10 or you won't receive any fixes or updates at all.

I upgraded a junky Netbook which has a poor Atom N270 chipset in it. It was running so poorly as it had all kinds of crap loaded and unloaded on it and used mainly just to surf the net. Ran all kinds of antivirus, windows updates, spyware cleaner, etc... Still was slow.
I decided to wipe it clean, reformat the drive, and start over, it still ran slow on Windows 7 Starter which is what came on it. I went ahead and upgraded to 10 and it runs much better, surprised it even worked on the old junker. However, 10 is nosey and intrusive in data gathering behind the scenes. You have to turn or disable a lot of stuff which is not real intuitive. In my case, it helped, but I will not do it on our main PC, leaving it at 7. |
