What a shame we're in the age of the CD then! I still remember the excitement I felt when I bought Going For The One when it came out and discovered the triple fold out sleeve.

I've never managed to get into Yes - I just don't like the sound of their music, and it completely fails to transport me to any dimension other than annoyance at most of the lyrics, Anderson's awful helium-filled singing style and frankly half-baked Crosby, Stills and Nash style harmonies, and the inability to develop a good groove (which, on the positive side, they often manage to get into).
I first heard Yes decades ago - I borrowed "Relayer" and another album (I forget which) from a friend and taped them. Despite not liking the music, I held onto the tapes and repeatedly gave them a try - without success. I've since acquired all their back catalogue on the original vinyl - but still no joy. Something in there just switches me off completely and makes me wish I was listening to something else.
I could care less about the razor-sharp production, crisp guitar execution, tight drumming and wonderful phat bass sound - the music all seems like overblown, overrated, pretentious drivel and I don't know why I keep giving it additional chances.

Certified I have said this before you are well named. Yes gave the prog scene a run of brilliant albums unmatched by any of their peers;great as some of them were. From the eponymous Yes Album via prog's crowning glory CTTE to Going for the one they blistered a trail unsurpassed by any other. To this day they are still the finest live band in the business and in Anderson they have the purest, most emotional voice in the business.Nearly matched only by Hammill and Gabriel.

Whether the albums are brilliant or not is a matter of opinion... I don't like them.

Again, speculation that I disagree with most heartily.
Nearly matched only by Hammill and Gabriel.
Now which one of us is Certifable?

First of all I love Yes music...but I think Yes music starts with "the Yes album" and ends with "Relayer" ...of course there are other good albums but not at the same level!
their first album, going for the one and tormato are very good but absolutely not masterpieces! I say that because in this site there are so many people who gives 5 stars to those albums and i disagree!!!
I agree with the fact that "close to the edge" is n^1 album of essentials prog albums!

Perhaps a little off topic, but related; (solo) Jon wrote the most beautiful song I heard about getting a child (Animation). It's good if you are able to see the beauty in things and even better when you can express it. He certainly did, (to be) fathers, check it out.
About Yes itself, I'm an oldtimer and I explored as much music as I could, but Yes was not there to stay. But I will give it a listen again, musical taste changes over the years I experienced.

It's hardly a fact to state that Anderson's voice is nearly matched by those of Gabriel or Hammill - Anderson has a peculiar tenor that I find somewhat unpalatable - but he lacks the range, both musical and dramatic, of either Gabriel or Hammill, and his "melodies" are almost invariably composed of safe steps rather than adventurous leaps and decorations - which makes him rather limited, as a few matters of fact.
And you say that Yes's trail was "unsurpassed by any other" - I don't see how this can be justified or verified - there were many great Prog bands blazing trails.
"The finest live band in the business" is again down to conjecture - the best live band I've ever seen was Fish/Marillion.
Purity in a voice depends on what you consider to be pure - and I think that there are many voices more emotional than Anderson - not least Fish - or Peter Hammill.
So which part was fact again?

Well, I'll just point out something that is NOT a fact - you think
Peter Gabriel has more range than Jon Anderson? And you are talking
about their voices?? That is completely absurd.

Having seen both Fish solo and Fish with Marillion neither can hold a candle to Yes live as much as I love the Fish man.As for voices Anderson's uniqueness give his voice to my ears a purity that no one else even Greg Lake at his peak can match..As for range and diversity I cannot begin to argue with you as both men (Hammill and Gabriel) have more diverse voices in that they can stretch from one octave to the next two or three.Hammill's control is awesome. But that other stuff about adventurous leaps and decorations is way off.And who are the many others? Neither Fish nor Hammill can hit the emotions like on 'Soon' and 'Turn of the Century to name but a few.

Sorry, but I always regarded lack of emotion as the chief fault of Jon Anderson.

I love Yes. I have all their albums (except Open Your Eyes) even though I
know about half of them are crap.
Yes Masterpieces (IMO):
The Yes Album
Close to the Edge
Tales From Topographic Oceans
Near Masterpieces:
Time and a Word
Fragile
Relayer
Going For the One
Drama
Time and a Word is very close to a masterpiece IMO. It's still yes trying to
find their own style but it is fantastic. Fragile's less than 3 minute
numbers on here are good, but bring the album a little short of a
masterpiece IMO. Relayer. I love this album but just think that "To Be
Over" is a mediocre song. Gates and Sound Chaser remain as two of my
favorite yes songs so it's very hard for me to judge this album. All the
songs on Going for the one are great except for wonderous stories.
Drama is a great album, and in my top 5 favorite yes albums but it does
fall just short of a masterpiece (easily a 4-4.5 star album.)
Good albums:
Yes (debut)
Tormato
Magnification
The debut is a good album and a great first album. Tormato is grossly
underestimated and is definitely a good album in my book. I loved
Magnification (with the exception of the 2 or 3 anderson pop songs.) Had
the Anderson solo pop songs not been included it would easily have just
missed masterpiece status. The whole album just gives off a great
uplifting positive message.
OK albums:
The Ladder
Decent effort after a terrible string of bad albums/drought for the band.
Horrific albums:
90125
Big Generator
Union
Talk
Open Your Eyes (only assuming)
90125 being the start of the horrific album era. A good rock album (as
many say)? Far, far from it. Zeppelin wrote good (actually incredible) rock
albums. This is not a good anything album. There's not much else to say
about the others. There's one song I like on both BG and Talk (can't
remember the names) but Union is just repulsive altogether.
Overall Yes has had some amazing moments and some horrible
moments.
