You know ITCOTCK title track has a very strong melody and like I said it's good. The thing is the prog element is mostly in the mellotron sound. Just because a song is long that doesn't really make it prog. R From a purely technicaly admittedly prog snobbish point of view really the only real prog track on the album is 21st century schizoid man.The other tracks have all the window dressing but none of the substance of the pure progginess of what came later(even by KC). But for a first album it's not bad. On it's own it is a great prog album. I understand why it's considered the first prog album but that's really more about it's commercial impact and reputation more than anything else. Listen to the first Soft Machine album or The Nice or PF's saucerful of secrets. The ingredients were already there.

you know prog isn't exclusive to the cliche weird time signature symphonic british sound, right?
if you're really trying to argue that schizoid man is the only real prog song on the album, then by that logic a lot of prog bands aren't really prog. |

Yeah, they're called neo prog. ![]() ![]() And if we use the logic that it doesn't have to be in odd time signatures or have long instrumental sections or whatever then just about any "arty" band cand be considered prog. Edited by Prog_Traveller - February 21 2013 at 15:27 |

so you actually think prog needs to have odd time signatures and music can't be progressive without them? |

My favorite is "I Talk to the Wind", whether it is progressive or not. :)

I somewhat agree with Prog_Traveller, the most obvious thing to point to when trying to differentiate King Crimson or Yes or Rush from the rest of the rock world is that they do focus more on extended song structures, interesting rhythmic devices and/or daring harmonic constructions; obviously not all of their songs have these elements and some non-prog groups occasionally do use things like that, but if you start broadening the definition of prog too much you'll wind up in all sorts of logical contortions trying to include this or that and suddenly coming to the horrific realization that Madonna could be considered prog. I think the point is that Schizoid Man was arguably the most daring and provocative sonic adventure on the record; the other songs (maybe with the exception of the second half of Moonchild) weren't that great a leap from something like Days of Future Passed. |
