I wasn't planning to include Greece here initially, but I've had so many great suggestions for Greek bands to be added to the list that it would have been churlish of me to exclude them. At least I drew the line somewhere by not including Turkey and Israel in the list, even though they're both in the Eurovision Song Contest.

That's an old, political definition of "East Europe", and I think it's better with an attempt for a new, geographical one. |

You could say this blog has been "Balkanised", because I've included all of the countries in former Yugoslavia too. I can see Octopus-4's point though, because Eastern Europe for me always meant the countries behind the Iron Curtain in the Soviet sphere of influence, at least up until 1991 anyway. |

By now, I've been looking at Wikipedia's article about "Eastern Europe" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Europe), and it looks like it's a very complicated matter how to use this term today as a geographical one.

I had a look at that Wiki article too. At least this all-inclusive East European thread saves me starting a separate blog just for Greek prog.

And anyway, considering which countries have been included so far, it's best to think of this thread as mainly concerning those which previously have been called "East European" - some of these countries may today often be called "Central European". |

The full list of East European prog bands is about two thirds of the way down on Page 1, if you haven't already seen it.

Re Poland, BELIEVE is an offshoot of COLLAGE that has done great work, and ALBION is an excellent Collage influenced band. There is also the project MR GIL which features the main guy from Believe.

Thanks for letting me know, and if they sound anything like Collage, then that's a band I can really Believe in.

As things turned out, I discovered over sixty "new" prog artists in my Greek prog blog, and that doesn't even include Metal, so it turned out to be well-worth while featuring the Greeks separately from the rest of Eastern Europe. "Praise old wine, and new prog" - an old Greek proverb by Pindar.

^ We're gonna need a bigger blog..... When I first started this thread, I had no idea just how many great bands there are from Eastern Europe, so I'm now planning to devote a whole blog to each individual country, starting with Hungary, then I can look forward to a Bacchanalian feast of Gabor Szabo's jazzy albums, as well as two of the biggest bands in Eastern Europe: Locomotiv GT and Omega. I'll try not to keep you all waiting too long for a Hungarian prog blog though, otherwise I'm shark bait!
