Very entertaining interview! The only downside is that you talk very little about music. It would have been interesting to know more about how you get your music inspiration, write and record the material. Maybe I'm just missing the point with these interviews.
| Well, it's not like I'm too hard to get a hold of!
As far as musical inspiration goes and how I write music, I essentially just mess around on one of my instruments until something "falls into my lap" so to speak- something I've not heard before. I will often place my fingers at random frets or keys, play, and see how it sounds. If I like it, I begin to construct around it. Original music for me almost never begins with a melody- it begins with the chords. The chord progression gives birth to the melody.
This is why I almost never practice anymore. Every time I sit down with a mind to just practice, I wind up writing music and it goes from there.
I almost never record more than ninety seconds of music in one day. I'm constantly going and coming, letting what little bit I've recorded "sink in" before I continue with it. This leads to a lot of scrapping because if part of a piece doesn't grab me after a while, it's gone.
This means my music takes years to create. Some of the music that will be on this next album (and the album after that and the album after that) was started years ago. One piece of music I've been sitting on for almost nine years now- and it still isn't finished. However, it doesn't sound stale to me yet, and that's how I know I have a winner. I'm sure opinions will differ in that regard, but I don't write music with a bunch of other people in mind. I get to be the sole judge of whether something I've written and recorded passes muster (although my wife will sometimes walk by with a bizarre look on her face and then I know I'm probably not doing something right ).

What did she do when you were testing out your Koenjihyakkei style vocals?

I live in a sphere.
Though I always wished there would be an unseen audience that would cheer and applaud every time I walked into my house like they do on sitcoms.

I always wish the same, except instead of cheer/applause for that kind of stuff it'd be laughter for my jokes..

Thank you, your followup is much appreciated on my part. I was especially surprised to read that your compositions begin with a chord progression and not a melody, which is something that I've not tried myself. Usually it's either the melody or a catchy guitar riff that starts things off for me.

Yes. The more music and the less politics from Robert the better...
(Actually he's far more reasonable than my joke would imply...)

There is a lot of truth in this interview. And I for one also get my daily news fix from H. Plainview.

Henry takes great pleasure in breaking news from around the world/internet in the Shred and beyond. He's like Fox/CNN/CBS/BBC/The Onion and all major press outlets in the world combined into a posting machine.

I'm ashamed to admit that it's the first interview I read, but for what it's worth, I enjoyed it quite a bit. And I lol'ed too.
