Don;t want to hijack this because the examples one uses aren't that important to this black midi topic, but Nick Drake's and Portishead's music are so important to me.  Nick Drake's story has touched so many people, including myself who also has suffered from depression and suicidal ideation.  While music of his is sublime to me and I got into him before knowing his history, the story of Nick Drake himself makes the music all the more poignant. I only got into his music five or six years ago after seeing "River Man" compared to Comus' "The Herald" in an article.  There is a fragility to his music and melancholy that touches my proverbial soul and I know his music has touched many others and he has become better known since he got shared on the internet.  By the way, some will know his sister, actress Gabrielle Drake, who was in UFO amongst other things.  I've seen almost all of her... and that's just from one movie! ;)  As for Portishead, another band I go into late, but better late than ever.  While I adore "Teardrop" by Massive Attack (with the wonderful Elizabeth Fraser from Cocteau Twins on vocals), Portishead overall is way more important to me.  Here's a lovely video that combines Portishead's Roads with Massive Attack's Teardrop.

And then Geordie releases "Holy Holy" and all is right in the world again.
