Part the Second is largely old motW material from when the band was arround mixed with a fair amount of new material (Rose Quartz Turning to Glass is probably all new material but a lot of the rest resembles the softer side of motW) , but in either case he's still the main composer of music in the two groups. Have you heard his solo work? It sounds almost nothing like the two bands IMO, very slow and makes me think how the soundtrack to a scary film should sound (i.e. scary). |

Don't know where i would place Part The Second in my big ol' list on the previous page, but I'm definately pleased with the results. I admit i pretty much checked Toby's blog every couple of days to see if it was released yet. I kind of hear it as the missing link between motW and Choirs.
Only two little aspects of the album that i'm slightly disappointed about. First, and I admit this is REALLY petty and geeky, I would have liked to hear the same guitar harmonic riff-thing (the one that Bath opens with) somewhere on Blue Ghost Revisited. I know that's just me being an ***hole but I really like reccurring themes and stuff. Sorry.
Secondly, I kind of wish that it had heavier parts like the other albums but it's a fine listen without.

Much much better than BLD part the Second is. Definitely one of the best things Toby's ever had a hand in.

I've listened to it like at least 6 times already which is phenomenal because it means I have to listen to an album in multiple settings. Some of the stuff on there is genius, and all of it is good. Up there with the best of the year.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

don't feel stupid, i can see how you might have been distracted by the amazingly composed solo and your ears couldn't process any of the other music underneath it. =)
btw, please don't take any of that sentence with any kind of seriousness except for the part about not feeling stupid.

For me Leaving Your Body Map is the best thing Toby has done, but then again Choirs, Bath, and many more (almost everything actually) are absolutely amazing. Actually, I've heard all Toby Driver recordings that I know of including his non-comp work and I can honestly say that I enjoy all of it. He's one of (if not the most) important composers of rock (well... related) music in the 21st century.

Toby speaks about his worst gig ever here. Surprisingly (or maybe, not at all), it was at a prog festival.

I've actually got the MP3's, and it's not actually anywhere near as bad as that makes you expect. The guitar's out of tune in parts, but other than that it's a damn good performance IMO. |

That's exactly what I thought!! I just received my vinyl of Kayo Dot's Stained glass; gonna listen to it tomorrow. So, I love maudlin of the Well and Tartar Lamb (I and II... particularly II), but I'm still trying relatively new to Kayo Dot. I like Choirs of the Eye and Stained Glass; I have Coyote, but it's hasn't quite clicked yet. What Toby Driver album would you guys next? Solo, Copper Tongue, or Blue Lambency. I'm considering Blue Lambency Downward, just because I love the album art, but I'm open to suggestions. (I also don't have Psychobells, recommended?) |

As much as I adore Blue Lamency Downward, I'd have to say Choirs. Choirs is one of those untouchabley Godly albums IMO. BLD is also a masterpiece though. Dowsing Anemone is good as well, although my least favourite Kayo Dot album overall (but still a 5* album Toby's solo is also brilliant, although not what most Kayo Dot/motW fans expect going into it. Psychobells is much less polished and much more amateurish than the other motW stuff and suffers for it, but is by no means bad. Has a couple of brilliant tracks as well. If I had to pick just one, it'd be Choirs followed by BLD. |

Personally, of the ones you havnt got I'd get them in this order BLD, Psychobells, Dowsing Anamone, Library Loft. The only two albums he's ever recorded that sound the same are Bath and Leaving Your Body Map, and they came from the same sessions and are ment as companion albums. And give Coyote time, its almost as godly as Choirs. ![]() |
