The Crown S1&2
I put these together as Matt Smith and Claire Floy play the younger versions of the Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen respectively. Matt Smith is incredibly underrated as an actor and really captured the young Duke perfectly for me. However Clair Foy overdoes the posh accent to the point of parody and that grates a bit. Never boring even though if at times stretching credulity with imagined conversations. 7/10

We recently watched the first movie in the third season of the French crime TV-series "Les Rivières pourpres" ("The Purple Rivers"); we watched it in the original French. In this episode a bacteriologist creates a mutation of the pest bacillus that only he has an antidote against and uses it to kill certain cops, and the investigators have to find out who is behind this and why he kills them. The series is pretty dark and a French equivalent to Nordic Noir. 7/10.

The Undoing 2020 (6 episode Mini Series) 8/10 A tense Whodunit starring Nicole Kidman, Huge Grant and Donald Sutherland. A wealthy family is front and centre as an unfaithful husband's lover is brutally murdered. This one will keep you guessing right to the end.

Maid - (Netflix) This was only intended to be a 10 episode mini series with no intention of there being other seasons. And I hope there aren't any more. Because that would ruin this almost perfect drama that it would do many people a lot of good to watch and think about. Very heartfelt performances by everyone. This one will make you laugh, cry and just get angry because it is all real. It's all based on memoirs of the person represented by the main character. My wife lived most of her life in a similar situation and, though it was a bit triggering for her in a few places (never over the top however, thank goodness), she loved it and commented several times at how it hits the nail right on the head. Amazing series! 10/10
American Rust - (Showtime) This is a very slow moving drama that is based around a murder and Jeff Daniels plays an intriguing character that gets way too involved in trying to protect the accused. There are a lot of scenes that are devoted to character building, but in this case, it's way too much. The same story could have been told a lot better in 5 episodes making everything a lot tighter. Yes there are some scenes that remain with you for a long time, some effective, others you would rather forget. It's dark, depressing and hard to watch, but something keeps you there once you start watching. It might be the hope that things will happen, and some things do, but a lot of time passes between any sort of payoffs, good or bad. The show tries to be pensive and provoke thought about the state that lower-class Americans are in, but a lot of the acting is lacking in emotion. At times I found myself wishing scenes would hurry and get over, and that's not a good thing in this case. There is good and bad here, but it's mostly pretty blah. And, there is no real "who-done-it" here because you know fairly early on what happened and who did it. There are very few bright spots to this real downer of a series. 5/10 Edited by TCat - November 13 2021 at 08:54 |

Finished Alice in Borderland tonight. 8 episodes and certainly more to come with future series. It's based on a graphic novel so it depends on how that pans out I suppose. Was it as good as Squid Game? No it's not, but definitely worthy of a watch. I can't say too much about it without giving anything away, but it involves enforced games and lots of death. 8/10

Very entertaining although I wanted to be more surprised by the ending. Can't say much more as it would be a spoiler.

I haven't finished it yet, but I'm working on a new Chinese tv show called The Rebel Princess (aka Monarch Industry), starring Zhang Ziyi (of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). It's visually ravishing; every scene is stunning. It starts off a bit slow and wasn't sure I'd be able to get through it, but the more I stuck with it the more gripping it became. It's online at Viki.com (http://www.viki.com/tv/36360c-the-rebel-princess), which is a fantastic source for Asian shows, including Korean dramas. Be forewarned, though: there's 68 episodes, which seems a bit mad!

I am getting close to finishing watching 1977's short lived, but brilliant all the same, science fiction series "Logan's Run" , based on the excellent movie of the same name that premiered in 1975. Back when characterisation was just as important as special effects, and Star Trek's writer D.C. Fontana was involved; the show's interesting, thought provoking scripts sometimes borrow from Star Trek TOS, but there are enough new twists and turns to make this a real keeper for those that love quality science fiction, despite the fact that Logan's Run the tv series did not even last a full season. An example of a tv series that was "too intelligent" to survive for very long.

I keep thinking it will get a re-boot at some point. The film is great indeed but seemed to get a bit 'lost' amongst all the other sci-fi classics of the seventies (there were more than a few!)

Code 404 (2 seasons)
This is almost a throw away thing made by Sky. It's sci-fi based comedy starring Daniel Mays as a British 'robo-cop' but he's a bit of an idiot and was actually a bad police officer when he was alive and not much better in his enhanced state. Having been brought back from the dead as an experiment and given enhanced AI abilities, he's drives his partner nuts (played beautifully dead pan style by Stephen Graham) and causes more problems than he solves. Easy to watch fun. 7/10

Dopesick (Hulu) is a pretty good scripted recounting of the crisis started by the marketing of Oxycontin. Though the acting is a bit stilted in the first episode, it gets better as it goes along, but never really perfect. Michael Keaton is great and Peter Sarsgard does a good job also. Michael Stuhlbarg is his usual creepy self. There are also some decent performances from some of the other actors. Executive produced by Barry Levinson and others. The 8 episodes can be a bit uneven at times, but the characters and the character stories will keep you watching so it is quite satisfying over all. 7.5/10

COBRA: Cyber War 2021 (6 episodes)
Starring Robert Carlyle as the Prime Minister , COBRA is the word used for when the Cabinet (UK Government) is urgently reconvened in time of crisis. I found it all a bit flat and lacking any real tension. Watchable mainly thanks to Carlyle and David Haig as a very slimey career politician. Also Neil Stuke is perfect as a far right opportunist trying to cash in on the general disenchantment of voters. Sounds familiar?! 6/10

I've been really into K-pop lately. Absolutely LOVED It's Okay to Not Be Okay --the acting, the subject matter (mental health, childhood trauma, autism), the visuals (sets, setting, animation, and color) and costuming of Seo Ye-ji, music, and story arch were fabulous. I think it is my favorite television series of all-time!
Also, had recently seen intriguing actress Han So Hee in Nevertheless and 100 Days My Prince so I jumped into recently released Netflix series My Name. Finished it in two days. Though it was quite violent (great fight scenes if you're into that kind of stuff), the acting of the main cast was incredible--especially the commitment Han So Hee made to the lead role. Simply amazing! Now watching seson 2 of The Great and loving every minute of it--the cast is so incredible--every one of them--though Nicholas Hoult and Elle Fanning are so entertaining--their onscreen chemistry is so wonderful. |

Yep I'm a big fan of this weird 'biopic' of the young Catherine The Great . Nicolas Hoult is just having the time of his life , not unlike Jeremy Irons in The Borgias, another formidable show.
