Well, I have recently been listening to a large amount of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and it has me aching for more. Now, I don't mean that I am looking for some post rock. No, instead what I am looking for are some albums composed of dark, lengthy (10:00+), and preferably instrumental songs; whether they happen to be post rock or not is irrelevant.
So, any suggestions? EDIT: Dammit, I spelled "disturbing" wrong in the title.... ![]() (P.S.: I am not entirely sure if I posted this in the wrong spot or not, please feel free to move it if so.) Edited by _JC_ - April 07 2008 at 00:58 |

Present, Univers Zero, and Art Zoyd should, hopefully, fit the bill.
Try Present's "Promenade Au Fond D’un Canal" off Triskaidekaphobie and both parts of "Le Poison Qui Rend Fou" off the same name album. I'd also recommend music off other Presnt albums like Certitudes. ![]() 1989 Triskaidekaphobie / Le Poison Qui Rend Fou From Univers Zero, I'd suggest music from Heresie and the other albums. Try "La Faulx" as but one track example. From Art Zoyd, I might suggest "Musique Pour L'Odyssée" to start and the title-track is great. All albums are worth exploring. Try Jacula, the debut's "In Cauda Semper Stat Venenum" is very good. Shub-Niggurath's "Incipit Tragaedia" off Les Morts Vont Vite is terrific. And i'd like to recommend music from Arachnoid's self-titled. |

Well, I had some distubing tracks to recommend until you revised your post.
![]() Try Steve Roach Darkest Before Dawn. Clocks in at over an hour of continuous dark cold deep space electronic music. |

Over here 'distubing 'could be intertrepeted as getting off the underground and returning above ground....

Spot on! Triskaidekaphobie, Le Poison Qui Rend Fou and Heresie are all frightenly dark, complex and disturbing. Not easy listening by any means, especially Heresie, but extremely rewarding stuff, in my opinion. For some other zany music, check out Faust's debut! |

If you can find it, Neheh (Kehr) is the sole 70 minute track on Sons, a group improvisation by Christian Vander, Klaus Blasquiz, Jannik Top and Rene Garber recorded immediately after they completed MDK. Almost toally arrythmic, it's what I'd expect a black mass to sound like.

Try Van der Graaf Generator, preferably the "Pawn Hearts" album, if you want songs that are long and disturbing. The album has three tracks, two around ten minutes and one twenty three, all with a rather dark, disturbing atmosphere, particularly the closer "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers".
King Crimson as well I think manages to be pretty disturbing at times, as does Tool. However, all the bands mentioned do have vocals but especially in the case of Van der Graaf Generator, they are well worth it and only add to the madness. |

I think UZ Heresie is (as mentioned before) exactly what was asked here.
Another perfect example is "Aumen" - a 17 minutes track from Can's "Tago mago". The whole album is prety dark and disturbing (with most of the tracks pretty long) but all the other involve singing. if singing is O.K. than "Phalus dei" of Amon duul II is another great album that fits your request, especialy the title track.

try "Der Atommolch" by Guru Guru from their album "Hey Du". ok, the track is a few seconds short of the 10 minute mark (9:46) but else completely fits the description (especially if you understand German and get the lyrics). the voice of the Atommolch (German for "Atomic Newt") is utterly creepy, especially when it laughs towards the end. the vocals are not sung but spoken.
the track "Purificatem" on Offering's "A Fïïèh" album is also very dark and disturbing and makes me think of a black ritual being performed (actually the whole album sounds like that, but especially that track) Edited by BaldJean - April 08 2008 at 14:16 |

Top of my list will probably be Plague of Lighthouse Keepers - VDGG, Opeth - The Moor and pretty much everything epic done by Tool. Tetragrammaton - Mars Volta is also quite disturbing, if you can find a way into Cedric Bixler's way of thought.

If by disturbing you mean the music and not the lyrics, get into early Tangerine Dream.
