4 stars Shadow Circus is the project of members of the Devin Townsend Project and Pain of Salvation. Their first three releases were in the style of symphonic prog, but with this new release, the band starts a new chapter of heavy prog with a clear metal edge. The album is inspired by horror and dark fantasy. The overall sound is melodic and heavy, with some pondering drums and soaring guitars. The keyboards played by the frontman and guitarist are mostly heard in the background. I did enjoy the powerful bass sound (coming from two bass players!) that takes center stage in many places, especially in the songs "Vampires" and "Into the  Fire." "A New Death" is really intense, with some heavy passages showing influences from Queensryche. 'Moonshine Haze" has some brilliant vocal melodies and is my favorite song on the album. The songs are not complex but go to the point with a catchy chorus. The production is excellent, which is no surprise coming from a band that has some experience. 3.5+ stars.
