I'm interested in getting a Patrick Moraz album but i dont know where to start.

I was going to get 'The Story of I' but it has very mixed reveiws on this forum.

Can you give comparisons to other artists to give me an idea of the Moraz sound?

I would describe Moraz's music as every eclectic, a mixture of styles. He dosn't play by any rules or any particular format. I can find every aspect of styles in his albums, jazz, fusion, prog, ambient, you name it. 'The Story Of i' was once described as the first 'world music' album and I'd agree with that. If you like that album then I don't see why you shouldn't like his others. If you prefer the more straight prog style with an element of jazz then you might want to check out his pre-Yes albums with a band called 'Refugee'. They were a three piece that also had ex members of 'The Nice' in the band. His two albums with Bill Bruford are also worth checking out, 'Flags' and 'Music for Piano and Drums'.

I have only 'Music for Piano and Drums' with Bill Bruford, it's a particular album: extreme jazz, in my opinion not an absolute masterpiece but really interesting to listen to!

"The Story Of i" is rather a mixed affair. One moment it'll be some wild, exciting jazz with a south american twist and the next it's the most cringe-worthy pop imaginable. I'd suggest listening before buying unless you find it going cheap.

I'd say "The story of !" is the only one worth seeking out. Better though sticking with "Relayer", and his work with the Moody Blues.

Don't forget his work on Chris Squire's 'Fish Out Of Water'. Even better than 'Relayer' IMO. Him & Bill Bruford are awesome on that album. No wonder they decided to work together again later on! I would haved loved those two to have recorded an album with 'Yes' together

Story of i is excellent, his follow up Out in the Sun is less good but still qiute listenable. Refugee though is really good. Then again I do like the story of i a heck of a lot

If u like Brazilian calypso-sh*t, then go ahead with Story of I. IMO he hasn't done one single good solo-album but his two albums with Bill Bruford are great, just great!!!

Ugh! Can't stand that album. I got rid of it as fast as I possibly could (I'm not capable of moving at the speed of light, yet, you know). Moraz is a very talented man, of that there is no doubt. However, as a solo artist, the guy just chafes. Refugee, Yes, Squire's Fish Out Of Water, and as one half of Bruford/Moraz, the guy's just brilliant. Kicks major ass. His entire solo discography, OTOH, is peppered by some of the WORST crap I've ever heard. And people bag on Wakeman's solo stuff? Take a listen to TimeCode and tell me that's not garbage!

My advice: get everything with Moraz as a SIDEMAN. Ignore everything with Moraz as LEADER.

The story of I is by far his best Album. If you look at the reviews (even on other sites) you will see that. He made it around the time he was in yes (even performed some songs of this album in one of the best shows yes Ever did), so he was at his musical peek.

Enjoy listening,

Refugee was a short lived but very impressive symphonic rock group.Moraz practically blows the opposition away in one fail swoop and is well backed by a solid rythym section in ex Nice players Davison and Jackson.Sadly Moraz was tempted away by Yes although we did get Gates Of Delirium as a result so I shouldn't complain!

A curiosity for Moraz fans: did you know he played with a brazillian band from seventies called Vimana ? They would play as a new band, but some troubles appeared, and their project failled. More informations in allmusic: http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=Bkukqikp0bb29  and Vimana website: http://bandavimana.cjb.net/ - http://bandavimana.cjb.net/ (in portugueses language)

PS.: you can download (mp3) Vimana songs: just click on Discografia / Ouvir. Some songs are sung in english, others in portuguese.

"Story of I" is a good starting point.

It takes some time to a full comprehension but isn’t that great?
