So I was grooving on Bent Knee and this popped into my head as a fun poll. Just looking at the artists I have put up it is impossible to choose a favorite. So I'm gonna allow multiple votes.

German symphonic prog band Hoelderlin have a strong violinist, and Chris Karrer in Amon Düül II plays the violin on occasion with good effect.

From the list, the Mahavishnu Orchestra. It's hard to pass up Jean-Luc Ponty's solo efforts (Imaginary Voyage, Enigmatic Ocean, Cosmic Messenger, Individual Choice, etc.)

Van der Graaf. Graham Smith's violin on The Quiet Zone / The Pleasure Dome give that album a distinctly different sound from the Van der Graaf Generator albums.

Christoph Noppeney of Hoelderlin plays viola, not violin. but I wonder why you did not mention Michael Karoli.

The first violin-forward prog band that comes to my mind is FM, with the inimitable Nash the Slash (and later with the likes of Ben Mink, Aaron Solomon and Edward Bernard).

Voted UK over Crimson because KC not really violin-led. JLPonty and Didier Lockwood have some great stuff. Love Wolf's "McDonald's Lament". Love the violin on Bob Dylan's "Hurricane"!

Never listened to
Bent Knee and Dixie Dregs.
Mahavisnu ok, they are great but… I need time to listen better…
UK: good albums but they are not the early and genuine prog… they sound like already listened…
Kansas? I know only some songs by them but, in my opinion, they are not at the same level of the other bands in this poll. I cant say that Kansas is a great band. Good, ok, but not great. I cant compare Kansas with King Crismon….
So, I voted for Kc and Curved Air.

It's difficult to argue against anything Jean-Luc Ponty contributed to (as good as Jerry Goodman, Mark O'Connor, Eddie Jobson, and Geoff Richardson were). The award winning fiddler cut his teeth going toe-to-toe with Stéphane Grappelli!

Stephane Grappelli actually passed his violin on to Jean-Luc Ponty, who in turn passed it on to Didier Lockwood.

Voted Jerry Goodman and Jean-Luc Ponty but would've had to think harder if you'd have included ASTURIAS, BELIEVE, and, especially, KBB. Akihisa Tsuboy is AMAZING!!!!
An additional curiosity is the American band Streetdancer, whose 1976 album Rising is a cool (maybe not so heavy) trip towards the Mahavishnu style, but with a large dose of originality (e.g. oriental elements).
Violin may not dominate, but it's a coherent element of the whole and show off when needed.
