Wond'rous Stories. It doesn't have Another Brick... guitar solo or Follow.. Pop sheen. But it just has this glorious rise leading up to it's chorus.

Yes - Wonderous Stories has a lot of magic. Genesis - FYFM has a great ARP solo and the swirling Hammond T from Banks. BUT......... Floyd - ABITW II has that brilliant lead from Gilmour. The first time I ever paid attention to music - thanks Sir David !!

Wonderous Stories - Fantastic comeback hit by Yes after their hiatus for solo works. Follow You, Follow Me - The first real Genesis "hit" on the radio. Kinda poppish but not bad. Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2 - Not bad but there are better songs from that album than this one.

Another Brick might just as well be the song that's responsible for me getting into prog... I mean, the song for which I got into Pink Floyd, and then into prog (besides some other artists that I got to know around the time, like Focus, Harmonium, Rick Wakeman, Alan Parson's Project). However, I still like that song a lot, even if I don't consider it among their very best songs. Follow You Follow Me is nice, but not more than that. And I never really got into Wondrous Stories... nothing really memorable on that one for me. I guess from Yes the more obvious hit would have been "Owner of a Lonely Heart". Perhaps a good song for a poll like this one would have been "Dust in the Wind" too.

since when have I ever said that. I love Genesis.. I just think they were a better pop band than a prog one. They could write good songs.. but were out of their league as a prog group. Didn't have the chops, creativity to cut it as a 1st division prog band which many here rank them as. I enjoy songs by them in their prog incarnation.. but every single one of their albums tends to be the same. A few good songs.. the rest.. filler... and without the chops that made other 1st rate prog bands still interesting to listen to even when guilty of failing to hit the G-spot of great songwriting.. an interesting concept or what have you.

I'm ashamed to say it, but I agree.
The others are pretty good, but Follow You Follow Me is lovely.
If you forget that they are by Genesis so you don't compare them to the Trespass to Wind and Wuthering era, some of the later Genesis albums aren't bad.

Another Brick in the Wall isn't even in the top 20 Floyd songs, yet it's better than the other 2 tracks. (Wonderous Stories is in 2nd place.) Gilmour's solo? I learned it lick for lick, yet I could never play it even half the way he does. It's that solo which makes it magic for me. What a touch.

Funny how perspectives differ so much...
I think they had great chops but were mostly appalling as a pop act.. Often embarrassing and overshadowed in terms of song writing by many contemporary pop acts at the time. As a prog act they were fantastic thoughtful composers of music, not just shredding show offs and noodlers..

OK, I think they were great as both a prog band and as a pop band, though they do have some sub-par songs on both eras... and even some very annoying ones (more of them on the prog era for me, actually). However, I prefer prog over pop, so I do prefer prog Genesis over pop Genesis.

That's the greatness of Gilmour in my book. There are many guitar players who could learn the notes and play them perfectly. We have heard covers, we have heard live versions from Roger Waters concerts. However, they all loose something... you might hear the same melody, the same playing... but it just doens't sound the same... the feeling is gone. Perhaps if a live album from the Waters tour with Eric Clapton was released, he might have done a better job at getting the feeling right, in his own way.

The Yes for it being quite eloquent on a very classy album by the boys. The other two are radio fill.
