Has anybody noticed that the timing (7/8), chord progression, and melody is exactly the same in
"Solsbury Hill" by Peter Gabriel and "Solitary Shell" by Dream Theater, during the verses. Now I am a Dream Theater fan so don't think I'm just writing this to bash them. It just left me dissappointed since they must have heard Solsbury Hill at some point. I know when I heard Solitary Shell it sounded like another song and couldn't place it. It even further frustrates me after finding out that Petrucci is a Gabriel fan (as he mentions the "Peter Gabriel" esque part that was put in one of the Liquid Tension songs from the second release.)

Has anyone noticed this before? Both songs are available for download too so if you havent heard Solitary Shell (since we've probably all heard SH on the radio) you can download them to hear the similarity.

yeah now that you mention it....   Seems a pretty big tip of the hat eh?  Oh well I like both songs a lot and nothing will change that!

Gabriel link fixed

Very similar tracks...  Gabriel's is much more minimalistic and well-crafted, while DT's is more exploratory (though within the prog-pop structure).  Gabriel's gets the nod for Fripp's inclusion.

Hi. A month later from the last post I add my words to this post (I used search before posting a new topic... ).

I also immediately noticed the similarity. Well, it disappointed me for a moment, but then I thought that it was also a sort of homage.

I like them both, nonetheless.

Solitary Shell

Solsbury Hill

Yes, I must admit I noticed this on the very first occasion of listening to Solitary Shell, and felt it was a little too close to the knuckle then, considering they didn't give any acknowledgement to PG...

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Its 7/4..not 7/8

they're not idendical, they are very similar.but deffinatlly not identical. They probably used this song as a model, and wanted to do an acoustic song in seven four with that kind of a feel. But the chords arent the same

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.
