Topic: Favorite Songs Without Drums Posted: September 30 2013 at 14:56
Even though I am primarily a drummer, I love tracks without drums. I think its because it gives my mind a break from thinking about the drum parts, also the music tends to flow in a very cool way without such rigid time keeping. What are lists of your favorite prog songs (or even non-prog songs) that don't feature percussion or drums? (A little percussion is ok, especially keyboard perc).
Here's some favorites of mine
Spirit of the Water - Camel With Twilight as my Guide - TMV Motion Picture Soundtrack - Radiohead Horizon's - Genesis Oblivion Ocean - Pain of Salvation Without You / Dark Poet - Beardfish His Hands Matches His Tongue - The Dear Hunter Wait for Sleep - Dream Theater The Hermit / or his classical work - Steve Hackett Heartattack in a Layby - Porcupine Tree Dust in the Wind - Kansas tons of stuff - Tangerine Dream
Kind of frustrating... there are several songs that I remember being drumless and then when I double check there's small parts here and there. It turned out to be much harder to find tracks without drums than I thought!
Anyway, I know there's all kinds of good stuff out there that I don't know about or just can't think of right now so I'd like to hear from you guys.

Apart from the electronic stuff, "Rubber Star" by Secret Oyster only uses a bit of soft mallet cymbals to provide color, but the song is otherwise drumless. One of the most prettiest songs this side of the Yangtze River.

My favorites that come to might right off the bat are Modern and The Lie by Peter Hammill, both from The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage.
Hard to believe "Modern" is as heavy as it is without the benefit of drums. I almost forgot that they were absent.
I know! I always said the same thing. It's literally the most driving song I've ever heard without drums. I once had a dream where I listened to it and there were drums in the song. I had to re-listen to the track just to make sure I wasn't mistaken this whole time.

Some of the songs mentioned in the OP I like and hadn't actually noticed that they didn't have drums. However, Histoire sans Paroles, from Harmonium, comes to mind. One of my very favourite songs, and as a matter of fact this whole gorgeous album is notable for not having drums.

ELP - From The Beginning
Kayak - Nothingness
incredibly hard to think of prog tracks without drums that are not by electronic artists or Mike Oldfield. I first tried about 5 Kayak tracks that all start without drums but the drums come in later. The one above is very nice though and passes the test.
