Probably just asking for punishment here, since I'm already overspending on prog.
Been listening to a few groups with saxes/violins recently, and I've always loved the harp sound, so I'd like to see how that's developed by a rock/jazz group with a musician focussing on harps. Are there any prog bands out there (any era/genre, preferably non-metal) with a full-time harpist? |

Not really prog, but check out Joanna Newsom if you haven't already. I have Ys and it's great, it takes a while to get used to her voice but I really like it now.

Iona employs the use of a Celtic harp on at least one song per album, it seems. Beautiful sound.

Anything listed in the archives featuring Zeena Parkins in the band's roster contains harp playing. Most pertinent to progheads might be News from Babel, a sort of post-Art Bears project in an avant-garde song-based vein. Very good music. =)

I second Joanna, but if you really want to check out really good music dominated by harp (with the participation of other lovely instruments) then you simply must try Alan Stivell, especially his early 70's albums Reflets, Renaissance de la Harpe Celtique, A l'Olympia - Live and Chemins de Terre. Later stuff is also good, but these albums are prog-folk bliss.
A small sample (album versions are a bit better IMO) not necessarily featuring solely harp (if you want just harp then Joanna Newsom is really for you - if you get used to her voice):

   I did take immediately to her voice... very distinctive.. .and it was toned down a bit on YS from her first album. I remember when Bern brought her up... just floored by it... first thing I though of was something right out of Appalachia. Which I have always had a thing for... might be an acquired taste though. |

if interested in Joanna Newsome ..check this out.. .this was the video Bern posted last year that got me hooked.... from her first album.... YS .. her second album is better... and vocals a little less hard on the ears if this does grate on the ears. I took to it like fish in water though....

Jon Anderson of Yes experimented with the harp for a brief time. You can get the Vevey stuff on the remasters. With a bit of hard work, you might be able to find a boot of Awaken with a harp intro by Anderson.
