I thought that too, and so did the manager apparently. Found this quote on Wikipedia... Our manager, when he first heard it, thought it was about abortion, the kind of feeling of the, you know, the foetus, if you like, saying to the Mother 'Please give me a chance, can't you feel my heart, don't take away my last chance', all those lyrics are in the song but in fact what it is, is just about a young teenager that's got a mother fixation with a prostitute that he's just happened to have met in passing and he has such a strong feeling for her and doesn't understand why she isn't interested in him. It's a bit like [British actor] David Niven in The Moon's a Balloon, I don't know if you've read that book, he's very young, just come out of cadet college or whatever, and he meets this quite, you know, 45-year-old prostitute who he has a fantastic time with. He's special to her but it definitely can't go any further than what it is and that's really what the song is about, with sinister overtones. —Phil Collins |

I think Phil has massive issues.
I'm mean Genesis' most wholesome song Follow you Follow me. Pretty dark stuff.

'Mama' is a dark, venomous tune by this version of Genesis. Quite Prog too. This piece, and the Home By The Sea extravaganza, saves this album from the proverbial 80's disease. I find the lyrical content of 80's Genesis more sinister than the 70's stuff.
Genesis has to be one of the MOST successful groups from the ashes of Prog..... |

A lot of people said Genesis lost their heart and artist quality when Gabriel and Hackett left but tbh in the 80's Hackett and Gabriel were far more pop orientated. I think if Hackett and Gabriel had been in Genesis circa 78 onwards they would have been influenced by punk to an extent and had an harder edge.

Bateman goes over to his CDs and scans his vast collection. He takes one out and examines it. BATEMAN Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that I really didn't understand any of their work. It was too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. He puts aside the CD and takes out another one. BATEMAN I think "Invisible Touch" is the group's undisputed masterpiece. He puts on the song and gestures for them to follow him into the bedroom. BATEMAN It's an epic meditation on intangibility, at the same time it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christie, take off the robe. Bateman puts out a lace teddy. He motions to Christie to put it on. BATEMAN Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. Bateman starts to undress. BATEMAN In terms of lyrical craftsmanship and sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you dance a little? Sabrina dances awkwardly. Christie sits on the bed. BATEMAN Take the lyrics to "Land of Confusion." In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problem of abusive political authority. Bateman knots a silk scarf around Christie's neck - rather menacingly - then helps her into some suede gloves. BATEMAN "In Too Deep" is the most moving pop song of the 1980s about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. He turns on the video camera. BATEMAN Christie, get down on your knees, so Sabrina can see your a****le. Bateman looks through the viewfinder. BATEMAN Phill Collins solo efforts seem to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying in a narrower way, especially songs like "In the Air Tonight" and "Against All Odds." Sabrina, don't just stare at it. Eat it. He walks over to the sound system in his bedroom and slides in the CD. BATEMAN But I also think that Phill Collins works better within the confines of the group than as a solo artist-and I stress the word artist. This is "Sussudio," a great, great song, a personal favorite. SEX MONTAGE CUT TO "Sussudio." We see this in WIDE SHOT, or through the LENS OF THE VIDEO CAMERA. CUT TO: Bateman asleep in his bed with Christie and Sabrina on either side of him. Sabrina accidentally touches his wrist. Bateman's eyes open. BATEMAN Don't touch the Rolex. Bateman gets up from his bed and goes over to his armoire. He opens the drawer in which are a nail gun, a coat hanger, a rusty butter knife and a half-smoked cigar. He turns around to see Christie and Sabrina both starting to get up and get dressed. He takes the coat hanger. BATEMAN We're not through yet... CUT TO: Bateman ushering them out the door impatiently. They are both sobbing, badly bruised and bleeding. Bateman has a deep scratch on his hand and one on his shoulder. In the b.g. Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" is playing. |

The Roots - When The People Cheer Lyrics"I’m down to 95 dollars, that’s the extent of my richesOut of 99 problems, 98 of ‘em is bitches Out here hollering, what’s ironic is I’ve honestly been tryna do what’s right But some jawn legs in the air tonight like Phil Collins I’m a sex-addicted introvert, sucker for a pencil skirt Looking for a shorty coming from work that I can pervert" The Battle of Epping Forrest. "They called me the Reverend when I entered the Church unstained; my employers have changed but the name has remained. It all began when I went on a tour, hoping to find some furniture. I followed a sign - it said "Beautiful Chest". It led to a lady who showed me her best. She was taken by surprise when I quickly closed my eyes. So she rang the bell, and quick as hell Bob the Nob came out on his job to see what the trouble was. "Louise, is the Reverend hard to please?" "You're telling me!" "Perhaps, sir, if it's not too late. we could interest you in our old-fashioned Staffordshire plate?" "Oh no, not me, I'm a man of repute." But the Devil caught hold of my soul and a voice called out "Shoot!" Edited by Matthew _Gill - June 05 2014 at 11:12 |

I'd argue that every song Peter ever wrote was about sex, even Biko (the politics of power, oppression, punishment.....relationships, sex!). The post-Gabriel Genesis had the musical chops but lacked that visionary lyricist, so the boys just did their best Peter impressions and carried on with an ear to music, not lyrics. I just don't think Phil, Tony and Mike had it in them to write a whole album of double entedre and deep meaning. Music, sure; lyrics, no.
