I would call Belew a frontman, but I would hesitate to refer to either of the others with the term.

Wetton was a good vocalist and a better bassist, great at improvising, but I have to choose Lake. Hearing his voice in the first Crimson albums (my favourite ones from all the band's career) is like heaven to me

Belew for me... gave Crimson new energies during 80's and 90's and he's very innovative and creative... Very inffluential to KC career even more than Wetton or Lake...

Wettons voice on exiles is so digusting I can barely pay atention to the other aspects fo the song! As for musicianship, I think Wettons bass did a lot more for KC than Belews guitar!

I think Belew did something quite understated for King Crimson in 1981 that King Crimson REALLY REALLY needed at the time: he added some FUN. Think about it: Robert Fripp and Bill Bruford are two of the most meticulous guys in rock (though Bruford is no longer in rock), and T-Lev is an incredible musical chameleon who plays whatever best fits the music around him. Toss in a love of absurdly complex and constantly changing time signatures and you have a recipe for some really boring and tedious music. Belew added a sense of humor and a good bit of energy to a band that could have quite easily become a poster child for boring and cliche prog rock.

Very well said! I personally think Belew is a great singer, even though I realise his style can be an acquired taste for someone. On the other hand, I've never been a big fan of Wetton's vocals, but I have to admit he was the perfect choice for KC in those years.

Yeah he could have some fun, but out of king crimson's music! I think with Belew on king crimson it's another totally different band, not prog anymore, and... what's "Boring and Cliche prog rock"??, you mean prog bands that went for the mainstream? or prog bands that continued doing what they think was fine, and at the same time avoiding any monetary conditioning for their music? because I find the 80's King crimson to be near to what you say, and yes they went mainstream, and I really don't find that what you say in any truly prog rock band, what are you listening to?

I mean the "boring and cliche prog rock" that critics of prog rock tend to write off most of the genre as.
