This is what has to be done with progressive music IMHO. I did the same thing with classical and jazz.

The only one who should feel uncomfortable is me by saying Roine Stolt's guitar playing didn't impress me. Shocked

I listened to FK's Retropolis twice today and boy did this album grow on me! It's a fine album. What I enjoy about FK is all the variation in their music. It's always in constant motion. Kind of like progressive rock for people with ADD. Big smile Roine Stolt is slowly turning into one of my favorite progressive rock guitarists. He's just so tasteful and there's not a note wasted. I'm also getting quite used to his voice.

I've heard a few bands mentioned on here lately, what are they like?

Universe Zero
Citizen Cain

Also, any other recommendation would be welcome, doesn't have to be Flower King related, doesn't need to be prog necessarily, I just need some new stuff to dig in to.

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Toe - For Long Tomorrow
Gazpacho - March of Ghosts
Raised by Swans - Codes and Secret Longing
Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel, Tidal.

Stuff i've been into recently.

*grin* I love to hear that you're suddenly enjoying The Flower Kings and Roine, but with the meteoric change, I don't think this can be called slowly.  Still, great to hear that you picked all of those up.  You'll find a lot of good songs in there.

We're looking forward to hearing what you think of them all as you listen.  Please keep us updated.

Roland-

Another Genesis-type band is Discipline.

btw-i'm checking out simon says right now.  i love the keys and acoustic passages.  they are definitely inspired by genesis, but not totally rip offs.  good stuff.  more stuff to add to an already too big wish list :)

Cool.

I just like to point out that mentioned Citizen Cain as "genesis-like" is completely false.  It's true that their first two albums were very much in the vein of early Genesis, with the second sounding like a lost Genesis album.  However, since then they have become a much different band musically, though their singer has a very similar voice to Gabriel (which is something that is not really possible to change.....the sound of your voice).  The music has become very complex, very dark, and probably closer to Crimson or avant stuff.

I've grown tired of hearing the Genesis comparison applied to bands where it's not really a big influence.  I'm not a big fan of most Neo prog groups, precisely because they don't sound anything like early Genesis.  If anything I hear more of a Collins era influence, but mostly, I think the Genesis similarities are overblown, even with early Marillion (who have far more Floyd influence than anything else to my ears, and Fish seems more influenced by Peter Hammill than Gabriel).  Anyway, this is a pet peeve for me because I actually love a lot of bands that really do emulate early 70's Genesis, and I just find this comparison gets applied to nearly every band that is primarily symphonic or has a vocalist with a similar timbre to his voice as Gabriel.

Anyway, I would basically say that I'm not sure you'd enjoy Citizen Cain Roland, since they are borderline avant-prog these days, though still symphonic.

I also don't get Discipline being compared to Genesis, as I hear absolutely no Genesis influence in their music at all (whereas, Citizen Cain at least has a couple albums that have a heavy Genesis influence).

Looking forward to the new Kaipa. In the Wake of Evolution was so good that my expectations are quite high.

With these recs for Roland, I'm listening to Discipline.  they are the real deal.  not keen on simon says.

i'm also looking forward to the new kaipa.  i've really grown to like them, even their eccentricities;)  their albums are very warm and just chock full of dynamic range.  as i've said before, the cover for the new one is so cool!
