The cheapest one could start me off, k, but I want to be sure whatever I end up going with can process bass frequencies well...tried recording directly from bass to computer, came out mega-clipped and sounding not unlike someone just pooed a bit, k

You should be able to turn down the input volume on any interface to avoid clipping. Or are you talking about recording through the laptop mic?
