King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King has been a very important album to my musical development. But I'll rate the album based on the music alone, without regard to its importance.

However, it was 21st Century Schizoid Man that was my gateway to this album, and I think it's unlikely that I would've got the album without it. The Court Of The Crimson King is a great track, but not essential to me (unlike 21st Century Schizoid Man, The Court Of The Crimson King would not have provided the need to get the album). Although I Talk To The Wind and Epitaph are the type of King Crimson music that normally would not appeal to me, these two tracks (especially Epitaph) are very good, nevertheless. I give Moonchild a rating of 2/10 because I only listen to a fifth of that track, skipping ahead after the song part has finished to the final track.

I acknowledge the importance of this album, both to me, and to the history of prog in general, but give a rating of 8/10 to the album as a whole.

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

First reaction: Now that's a tenner for sure. Qualification (after reading ipd's discussion): As a critic and when rating albums I will always ask other questions than "how much do I enjoy it?" My enjoyment is intuitive and doesn't come as a rating number, and when rating there's always more analysis and consideration of history, what influenced what etc. I'm not saying it's "objective" (nobody can ever be), but still I try harder to come up with reasons that go beyond my pure personal pleasure.   I like this album a lot but maybe not quite as much as TAAB. Still for rating this is a sure 10, and TAAB not quite.

a solid 7, perhaps 8; I went for 7. the best track is "Moonchild". "I Talk to the Wind" and "Epitaph" are in my opinion the weakest tracks and leave a lot to be desired. I especially dislike Lake's singing on "Epitaph"

That's a 10/10 from me good buddy. Smile In the Court of the Crimson King is my favourite King Crimson album by a long way.

Maybe you would prefer the version with Jakko singing. Wink

4/10.
I used to like it, but as I heard other stuff, I lost interest. I still like Epitaph and the title track, but the rest does nothing for me. I'm afraid I'm not a KC fan.

I give it a solid 8. If Moonchild were only 2 minutes long instead of lasting 75 hours, I would rate it higher.

I round this one down to 7. The first and the last tracks are masterpieces, the middle one a sugary tearjerker. At that time they were not yet ready for 10+ minute tracks.

8 out of 10 for me. I love the whole album, though the improv following Moonchild does go on a bit. Still a landmark album. They did better, and these days i prefer Poseidon over the debut.

Exceptional. 9 out of 10 for me. After all these years, I still get a frisson of emotion when spinning Epitaph especially.

9/10....a Crimson fan and that's perhaps my favorite,  but I don't think I have ever given a 10 to any lp.

10/10 because of the music, historical significance and influence of this album.

I gave it an 8 out of 10. I was almost tempted to give it a 9 out of 10 but too much of moonchild is just too noodly and not really very musical imo(I know the Baldies will disagree :P). I don't hate it though and it's actually good for zoning out to but it's not anywhere near the level of everything else on the album.

9/10 - Excellent and a milestone album. I know it isn’t the done thing to say on PA, but the second bit of Moonchild did lose its charm slightly after the first five or so listens.....especially as you knew what joys were awaiting you in next half inch of vinyl!

I'll give it an 8 as well. Good but not perfection, and not the best KC either
