JESTER     A modern folk band who are firmly rooted in the medieval court jester style of Gryphon. Through a Weirdo's Eye sounds like it could have been recorded 25 years earlier, or even 500 years earlier! Jardine perform acoustic folk with traditional instruments (and occasional electric guitar) that's not a million miles removed from the sound of Mostly Autumn or Jethro Tull. That it be! Smile

JETHRO TULL       This Was always destined to be the highlight of any Prog Folk blog. Jethro Tull's early albums still Stand Up to scrutiny over half a century later. With the modern-day Benefit of the internet, I've been diving deep (with the aid of an Aqualung) into Jethro Tull's extensive discography. I'd have to be Thick as a Brick not to know that the original Jethro Tull (1674-1741) was an English agriculturalist who pioneered the use of the seed drill, but that's Living in the Past. In the present day,  Ian Anderson and his merry band of minstrels have been sowing the seeds of Prog Folk now for coming up to sixty years with A Passion Play of timeless songs and classic albums to their eternal credit. At the age of 76, Ian Anderson isn't quite old enough to be a War Child, but he's the original Minstrel in the Gallery who's not Too Old to Rock 'n' Roll, But Too Young to Die. Smile

JACKIE LEVEN (1950-2011)  Broken Heart   A Scottish folk and country singer and man of many names who modestly describes himself as "a songwriter of genius", Jackie Leven recorded his first album way back in 1971 under the name of John St. Field before going on to form New Wave band Doll by Doll in 1977. Jackie Leven's solo career proper began in 1994 with the release of the first album under his own name, but being a prolific songwriting genius, he recorded more albums than could conceivably be released under his own name, adopting the pseudonym Sir Vincent Lone to release three further albums between 2006 and 2009, in addition to a dozen more fanclub-only albums, released from 1997 up until his untimely death in 2011. Altogether, that amounts to over forty Jackie Leven albums in less than twenty years, making Bob Dylan's output look relatively sparse by comparison. Shocked

LINDISFARNE      A folk rock band from Newcastle-upon-Tyne led by "Geordie Genius" Alan Hull (1945-1995) with their best-known song Fog on the Tyne being one of those Marmite songs you either love or hate, but in the case of the dreadful 1990 remake featuring lachrymose footballer Paul Gascoigne (Gazza), it definitely veers towards "hate". Gazza should have been given a red card and sent off for totally ruining a classic song and as one out-of-touch judge memorably said at the time, "Who's Gazza!??" Tongue
