In the mid 80's MSM songs were just tunes I heard at the tennis club while in Montreal. After I moved back to the US, I had become quite the thrash metal maniac (long hair, band shirts, including, of all things, a Slayer tie-dye), but in such a testosterone-fueled genre, I had this need for a frivolous fun mainstream female-sung alternative to compensate for all that dark aggression. That's when I got into Gloria. She had the right voice for me, not shrill, and not prone to air-raid siren exhibitions. I liked the busy dance percussion too, something a lot of other pop singer tunes lacked at the time. As much as I was more into her dancy stuff, some of her ballads I actually liked. "Anything for You" is classic. Girl and guy are best buds, but she secretly loves him while he doesn't see the signs, looking elsewhere for love. Ooch! Plus, the swingy feel, the beautiful instrumental finale with the acoustic guitar solo building up to the big horns in a dramatic fading finish...yeah, I'm so lame I guess  My friends at the time didn't know I was such a fan (my secret cassette stash of her stuff hidden away from all the metal, goth and industrial tapes I had), otherwise I could have been banished from "the club".  Yeah, I shouldn't divulge much on my "summer of the cousin", but boy did I learn a lot about female anatomy in 79.

ELP - Love Beach (took the plunge at a $1) I think thats it for record shows until August.

Flo & Eddie | Rock Steady — their reggae album, recorded in Jamaica. Not bad. Released 1981. What more can you say? They’re a great team, good songwriters, their voices are golden, and they have good taste and a healthy sense of humor. Not to mention that they basically are The Turtles in the 70s; only legal constraints kept them from continuing to use that name after the Zappa gig fell apart.
Hatfield & the North | s/t — one of the finest Canterbury prog albums, which is saying a lot. There’s a special dream logic to this album that seems to build upon the segues previously introduced on Soft Machine’s Volume Two - making a concept seem there when it’s all really just sillyness Joe Jackson | Night & Day — a beautiful and sophisticated work, possibly the turning point between JJ the new wave guy and JJ the world class songwriter. And it has his biggest hit “Steppin Out”, which still moves me today The Guess Who | #10 — As great as Randy Bachman is/was, I think the Guess Who didn’t peak artistically until after he left. Under Burt Cummings’ guidance the band made some really eclectic albums in the early 70s. This album has a few of their best songs: Miss Frizzy, Glamour Boy, and Cardboard Empire are all contestants for my top 10 amongst their songs. Big Audio Dynamite II — The Globe : BAD was like the Sandinista album (my fav Clash album) minus the reggae, and with a few more pop hooks on the singles. The non-singles are still experimental as ever, which grows well on me. The Dead Milkmen | Bucky Fellini — The DM are are always a fun listen. This is from my wife’s collection so I’m fairly new to this particular album. |

Can't wait to give it a spin. I thought of you when I saw that CD based on the earlier discussion in this thread on the Cars  . I almost missed it as it was in a box on the floor underneath a table with a bunch of other CDs/vinyls. I know I could have ordered it online earlier but these shows/flea markets are about the thrill of the hunt to me. Reminds me of younger days when you browsed through album covers and deciding to take the plunge on some album based on the cover or something you read on the flip side of the album cover not knowing anything about the band or when you find one that you have been on the lookout for and finally find it.I have to say that I really enjoy this thread as I have found new and old bands based on what everyone is listening to. Plus the mini reviews or impressions of the music is great. Never paid much attention to this thread early on in my PA days here.

^ Same here, Jim. I've gotten many great ideas of stuff to check out from this thread. And it's funny, with the thrill of the hunt thing, that it does remain even at our "old" age. You would think by midlife that you'd heard everything there is to hear, but the cool thing is that it's not even close to that. There's still tons of great sh*t out there I have not heard, despite being a music-lover since the mid 70s. Also cool is that I still love the stuff I have heard before too, I've no less love for many of my favorite songs from ages ago.

Panorama was my first Cars album (and one of my first non-Beatles-related albums). Believe it or not, I used to hear "Touch and Go" constantly on the hit radio station when that album came out and I thought it was weirdly cool, especially the rhythm section during the verses. Cool bass! But when I saw that crazy looking star guitar one of the guys had on the back cover of the LP, I had to buy the record. Funny how that guitar shape fit their sound at the time...sort of sharp and futuristic-like.
Oh, and the Bucky Fellini mention...I used to have that LP, and don't remember what happened to it. "Instant Club Hit" was the big one I remember most, although I also remember "Jellyfish Heaven" being this sweet-natured bonkers thing and "Going to Graceland" was my fav...it rocked. I haven't heard any Dead Milkmen since 1990. Geez.

^ Similar reaction to Panorama as "futuristic" and generally pushing things. I recall that even back then, I recognized Panorama as the "curve ball" album compared to the first two. Didn't dislike it, but didn't play it much, as was more into other stuff at that time. Then, I also recall this sort of collective feeling that "Shake it Up " was a step back from the edge, a bit "easier" for the masses than Panorama. Years later, those first four albums all sound so good to me, better than they did then. Heartbeat City is different. It's still fun and I enjoy it, but not quite on the same level as the first four. |

Curved Air - Phantasmagoria Hatfield and the North - Hatfield and the North (Me too Steve! "Calyx" is the only track I could live without, although everyone seems to praise Wyatt's vocal performance. I keep saying on this thread I should get more Canterbury stuff  )Arachnoïd - Arachnoïd Susanne Sundfør - Susanne Sundfør (You'll see her name a lot this week. The arrangements on her debut are simpler but I think it highlights her talent for composition and performance. It's easily enjoyable as well.) Susanne Sundfør - The Brothel (Very complex arrangements on this one, which isn't surprising considering the producer, although many songs sound like Jaga Jazzist with guest vocalist.) Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Watch (First listen. I was surprised to see its high rating. I hope I'll like it better next time.) Camel - I Can See Your House From Here (The latest upgrades on my system are making me get rid of most of my Spanish pressings. This one goes next, and not because I don't enjoy the album.)

So a couple of months ago I heard it at my local CD store - I didn’t know what it was, but it sounded pretty cool. I did highly suspect it was one of the Elephant 6 bands (kind of a loose collective of psych/art rock lo fi artists who collaborate on several different band projects). I guessed it might be Of Montreal, but the guy in the store told me it was NMH. Okay, I thought. That wasn’t bad at all. So last night I was finally in the mood to play the whole thing. And I liked it. Can’t say it was a revelation, but it does have some neat surprising moments in it, which is always good. Lots of horns which gave it some class, and the vocals were on-pitch enough of the time not to get grating. It sounds like an album that wasn’t made with the idea that a lot of people would hear it. That sounds right on. I like stories like that. I haven't heard NMH enough to say much at all, but they reminded me indirectly perhaps of bands like Bright Eyes and even Eels, eccentric artists whose music takes time to seep into your pores. I certainly didn't dig my Bright Eyes or Eels CDs when I first got them home. I will try to give NMH more time and see where it goes.
