That Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe one is a real mixed bag, Sam. Some of it is great, the other half is wretched, with one or two tracks that are absolute dreck. Many Yes fans would be aware of upbeat calypso track `Teakbois' which is unbearable, but I also find `Quartet' far too syrupy and sickly sweet, and I'm not a fan of the female backing vocals on that one either. Approach with caution!
Been scratching my head with `Brain Salad Surgery' tonight as well. Not one of the masses who thinks that is a stone-cold vintage classic, I'm afraid. |

It's somehow like the albums Yes released around that time, I imagine I'll have to give it a listen someday, I've been curious to check that one.
Yeah, BSS leaves me cold too... |

Some parts of ABWH are definitely `proggier' than 90125/Big Generator, but it's the poorer stuff that really pulls the album down. If you can find it for a few dollars, it's probably worth checking out, but don't pay too much! I think those above mentioned two albums are more consistent, even if they're not prog at all.
Just my lowly opinion, but BSS....`Jerusualem' is a OK stuffy intro, `Toccata' is a bunch of cool noises, `Still...You Turn Me On' is a fine poppier break, `Benny The Bouncer' is dogsh*t, but the epic...there's great sections, but the carnival lyrics and the obnoxious overbearing vocals in the first half make me cringe, and the robot voices in the second half hideously date the album. I could understand if it had a devoted following, but frequently considered one of the all-time best?? I think the debut, `Pictures', Trilogy' etc are all far superior, even they none of them are exaclty favourites for me except the first album. Edited by Aussie-Byrd-Brother - July 04 2015 at 05:36 |

I love the epic track. I think the vocals are quite powerful. You're right about the dated sounds, but the music is happening, so much going on, so much tension in the music. The lyrics in the first half... well, maybe not the strongest, but there's some originality in it. For me BSS is second after the debut, but I also love the Tarkus suite, which for me is ELP's finest.

Sorry, Moogtron, I know I'm in the minority not really digging it as much as many others. I've kept at the album for years, and it just hasn't happened. I'm happy to let the won-over others (which would include you!) sings its praises!
Congrats on the Collab promotion too, by the way! |
