Banton's in charge of the bass and bass pedals, like on every other early Van Damme release. He and Peter shared guitar credits on the album, but I'm not entirely sure who played what.

Actually, Hammill plays all the acoustic guitar, Banton plays all the bass. Fripp presumably plays all the electric guitar.

To be more precise about Fripp on Lighthouse Keepers, there is this from Wikipedia:
"Robert Fripp provided a cameo appearance on electric guitar, which can be heard from 8:10-10:20 into the song and near the end of the song. (Fripp also had a cameo on Pawn Hearts track "Man-Erg".)" |

Fripp is on there, but in the case of the end of "Lighthouse Keepers", I think that's just Banton going nuts on the organ.

Agreed...it's my fave Hammill performance of all time. It's interesting though that the original vinyl version is a different vocal take than the CD version. I was so disappointed when the CD version came out and PH's was more restrained than the original. I've never been able to figure out why...perhaps the master tapes had a problem with the vocal track or something...anyone know the story? "And I'm trying hard not to shriek...Disengage!"

You mean you haven't heard the remaster from several years passed that had both versions on it. And yes, Disengage is my favorite Hammill performance too. Edited by Rednight - December 12 2014 at 15:12 |

No, wasn't aware of that. I bought Exposure soon after it was available on CD so I just recorded the vinyl version of Disengage to mp3 and made my own CD with the original Disengage in place of the newer one ![]() Was there any explanation in sleeve notes or anything why it was re-recorded?

Well, going off of memory, I don't recall Fripp reminiscing in the liner notes about why alternate versions of Disengage and Chicago were released on the '83 CD version. I can't even remember what year the remaster of Disengage came out. I will say that it is splendid to have and is easily attainable off of Amazon. That's because I had to re-purchase it from there in a soft paper jacket after some scumbag contractor went through the CD storage boxes in my garage and ripped off the one in a plastic jewel case that I'd originally bought at Tower Records. Oh yeah, Daryl Hall covers a song(s) originally sung by someone else back in '79. What I do know is that in the liner notes for the paper jacket remaster of Disengage, some offensive words in Urban Landscape are deleted. I have a feeling at least one or two good-hearted souls are going to correct me in this thread in the near future, and I'm grateful. |
