Most first albums are suspect, but:

Toward The Sun - Druid
Hybris - Anglagard
The Crossing - Big Country (I know they are not prog, but they have a lot of prog characteristics)

are examples of spectacularly good debuts.

Oh, and Asia's ST debut is much better than the lemon most people rate it as.

Very few Prog bands hit the ground running, most take a couple of albums to get into their stride and a lot of the early Prog bands didn't start out as Prog (as we know it). Script For a Jester's Tear was a great début that Marillion equalled but never surpassed; The Enid's In The Region Of The Summer Stars was another. De-Loused in the Comatorium is probably The Mars Volta's strongest album IMO. UK never improved on their eponymous début nor did Renaissance, (again, IMO). I would nominate Transatlantic's SMPTe and Ant Philip's The Geese And The Ghost, but I've not heard much of their other releases.

Definitely ELP self-titled, first Kansas, Nektar - `...Centre of the Eye', Floyd's `Piper', I.Q `Tales from the Lush Attic', `Marillion's `Script...' and the charming Yes and Jefferson Airplane debuts instantly come to mind for me personally!

Hell yes to works like Anglagard, White Willow, Tirill Mohn, the Flower Kings, Morte Macabre and Paatos `Timeloss' are all modern standouts for me as well
