Is there a meaning to the song “Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence” by Dream Theater, I just can’t make any sense of it! |

My search of this question brought me to this unanswered thread. Any thoughts to what is the meaning of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence?

Lyrically, it's about people with mental disorders, and the lyrics aren't strong at all.
But musically it is a masterpiece! -Jeff |

The "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" are 6 different instances of 6 different mental disorders. There is no coherent meaning to the song, but it instead narrates examples of these 6 disorders. It's basically about going over the edge, as far as I can tell.
Quite like the music tho

I guess that that is about what I got from it with the concept as well. I suppose that they are just following in the footsteps of Pink Floyd with this one then.
I was surprised how musically non-metal the song was. It is a case of them writing good music to play as a band, versus the solo fests that tend to inhabit many of their songs. I suppose that the non-metal playing is in line with Metropolis 2: Scenes from a Memory, except that I enjoyed the lyrical story way more with Scenes.

I had trouble with Scenes. I still don't totally get the story .
I like concept albums that are merely conceptual instead of narrative, as far as theming and lyrics go. You mentioned Pink Floyd....WYWH and Animals come to mind. Of course, The Wall is arguably both narrative and conceptual....
Oh whatever, I love Pink Floyd. Back to DT....

Oh, and while we're on the topic, count me among those that do not consider 6DOIT to be one song. More like a concept album of its own, if you ask me.

But the last 6 do sound great together. Like what you said earlier about the 6 different mental disorders.

Six Degrees, the entire release, is one of my favorite by them. I think others have already said this, but I don't think there was an interconnected story between the various sections, just random pieces about various mental disorders.
Personally, I think disc one is just as strong, Misunderstood is one of the better metal ballads found on any progressive CD and there are a few other gems as well. |

I think 6 degrees is as close to being one song as Dark Side of the moon.
On the other hand, I really like this album, but contrary to most of what I've heard in this site, it is because of CD 1: that one's just perfect for me, while I find CD 2 rather dull. I this one consisted only of CD 1, it would be my very favourite DT album. |

As far as the title say... it's just about the inner struggle of these 6 people... it doesn't mean that they need to interact or have a tight relation between them... so I don't find any wrong thing in that.... Is interesting -at that time- DT trying to explore mental missfunction and that things while a lot of metal bands aboard silly things like vimpires, dragons and fantasy stuff like that... They always have that side of "intelectual" approach of lyrics on intelectual music... so... I'm really pleased with these concept album... And is great to see them play as a band and not trying to show off their skills only... jejeje...
