So, after a minute of searching, I found this poll had been done before. But they were locked, so I'm bringing up another heated debate on what you should call it.

Anyways, what do you normally call soft drinks. Yes, I know that the CORRECT way to say it is soda, but people from other places say otherwise *shakes head, losing faith in humanity*.Tongue

Anyways, vote and discuss. If English isn't your first language, tell us what you've been taught to say.

To a Brit soda is something you put in whisky - fizzy water with some sodium bicarbinate (aka soda) in it.

The only fizzy pop that we call "soda" is cream soda, which is vanilla flavoured carbonated sugar water (ie it tastes like ice cream).

Pop. I think this poll has been done before though. I remember some guy explaining in a very clever way why pop is the right word to use.

Actually it might've been a "pop vs. soda" poll.

Edit: read the original message.

Haha, that reminds me of when I was in LA. I asked for Root Beer, but they gave me Dr.Pepper. Then I told them that I wanted Root Beer. Then they gave me another Dr.Pepper. Wacko

Coke. Obviously it only applies to Coke, but that's about the only thing I drink besides coffee anyway.

I call it a CFB (carbonated fountain beverage) within a small group of friends, but when I'm with people that still have a shred of sanity left, I say "pop" although I'm not opposed to "soda."
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal.

I find it surprising that pop's taking all the votes. When I think of pop referring to a soft drink it makes me think of the 50s and stuff like that, like some of the movies that emulated that era. I love arguing about this kind of stuff by the way.

Also, the children's game duck-duck-goose where I come from is called duck-duck-greyduck in Minnesota. Don't ask me how it came up in conversation.

or they didn't offer root beer, so they gave him the next closest thing.

I tend to say Soda on most forums I go on because most people are American and it saves the hassle of people asking what you're talking about.
But in Australia, the same applies as with the British it seems if Dean isn't talking crap, which I assume he isn't.
Soda water is the stuff you mix alcohol with and Creamy soda is the only fizzy pop drink here.
In the real world Australia, soda is generally referred to as soft drink.

I'm not into soft drinks (though I'll have the occasional Coke), but if I have to choose, I'll go for lemonade - especially the strawberry- or raspberry-flavoured one.

Here in NZ most call it "Soft Drink" - "Soda" is the aerated water that goes with Whiskey etc and is also termed a "Mixer" along with other aerated drinks such as Lemonade, Coke, Ginger Ale etc.  Smile

Oh yeah, like we really need another soft drink poll. Tongue

I'm going to have to go with cool clear water, the best soft drink ever invented. LOL

Coke Zero and the Sprite version aren't bad.  I do Kool Ade's with stevia sweetner.  Kroger's got a nice unsugared Gatorade alternative.  But really, nothing beats good water.  Maybe a good lemonade.

Hear, hearClap! Though I'm partial to some nice, home-made iced tea, with fresh fruit in it. I'll start making it soon!
