Topic: ULVER ...... what is that? Posted: October 07 2005 at 06:40 |
For last two weeks I'm listening Ulver "Perdiction City" and I can't
stop. I think they are great. I have listened some older albums and It
was shock of me. Metal band plays that music! I tried find them in prog
archieves, but there is no word about them. I read thas some people
called them Kimg Crimson XXI century. A lot of electronic ambient and
samples, strange vocals and sound imitation sonar "ping" and
hypnotizing saxophone.

Well the thing is Opeth isn't black metal They're much more death metal. I'm being hypocritical here because i usually speak out against genre nazis
Ulver did 'screaming' in some of their early stuff, yes. Although they do have one album (Kveldssanger) which is completely acoustic folk type stuff.

They were really incredibly developing their style starting from pure
black metal over some kind of post rock to something that could be
called prog metal (not unlike Opeth actually). I listened to all their
outputs and I've to say I prefer their latest and "William Blake" as
well the Kjellsanger one. But Perdition City is great as well if
one likes that style. I posted already a poll in the Collab's section
whether to include them but there was very little feedback, so I
assumed they aren't that much interesting and I did not add them to the
Archives. Moreover I really wouldn't know in which genre to put them,
they are very hard to categorize!

To be prog or not to be, that's not the question!

Perdition city is a great album
My favourite song is "The future sound of music" with this beautiful intro...
Well, I must say also Arcturus may be called "King Crimson of the XXI
century" IMO - maybe it's because of Garm, the visionary artist...
(which left the band few years ago)

I would love to see Ulver listed on here.
Their debut album Bergtatt is an amazing folky melodic black metal
album, maybe prog but definitely brilliant. Kveldssanger is a
great Nordic folk album, which they then followed up with Nattens
Madrigal, an extremely raw pure black metal effort. From this
point on they completely changed their sound and went into electronic
post-rock type music. If nothing else they're one of the most
diverse bands in existence, and have at least a couple very proggy
albums in their discography. The major issue would be which genre
to classify them under...

ive got Ghost reveries...its ok...but as every other prog metal album very repatative
song structure: HEAVY intro ACCOUSTIC/SOFT MIDPART and heavy outro...that is even more predictable than maiden
|
He specifically mentioned Damnation for a reason though....that album has no heavy parts whatsoever.

Growling's only really in death or doomdeath metal. And grind, I suppose. In black metal it tends to be shrieking or screaming.
On topic, though, Ulver are very good indeed. Stylistically all over the place
